If you are wanting something directly on the parade route where you can catch beads, those will already be booked up.

We have stayed several places in New Orleans. One place we really like is called The Biscuit Palace. It is right at the corner of Bourbon Street and Dumaine so it is right near the action. http://www.biscuitpalace.com/

We have also used VRBO http://www.vrbo.com/vacation-rentals/usa/louisiana#3172 which rents homes and vacations houses. This is nice too as you can get a real feel for New Orleans this way. If you are bringing a group, this is also a more cost effective way too.

We stayed in the Prince Conti which is a few blocks from the action. http://www.princecontihotel.com/ It has reasonable rates for the rooms.

You can also stay up along St Charles Street as all the parades pass on that street. It is farther from Bourbon Street action but during the day you can take the trolley into the french quarter and taxis at night. This can still be be cheaper than staying in the french quarter though. These area hotels normally only have a three day minimum whereas most places you stay at in the French Quarter will require a minimum of FIVE nights stay.

One tip: Always ask about parking if you are driving in or will have a rental. A lot of places do not provide free parking and parking in downtown New Orleans is a minimum of $10 a day and your car may not be easily accessible. Having a safe secure spot to park is important during Mardi Gras.

Big tip: Go to New Orleans the weekend before. They still have several parades a day with the same Bourbon street action. We have been to both Mardi Gras weekend and the weekends before and we can tell no difference in the party atmosphere. Although some parades may be larger on Mardi Gras weekend, you get your fill the weekend before too and you can even get closer to the floats. The best thing is, all the rates are normal rates for hotels, restaurants, etc., and not jacked up like they are during Mardi Gras weekend.

Or you could stay outside the city and park by the Quarter. It would be cheaper in the long run, I think. Also, you should have made arrangements earlier this year, because the closer it gets to Mardi Gras, the harder it is to find a room in NO. I live an hour and a half away (in Houma), and even our hotels get booked.

Wherever you decide to stay, make and confirm reservations well in advance. I lived in New Orleans all my life, and sometimes accomodations are scarce. Things weren't that bad last Mardi Gras due to Hurricane Katrina, but we still had a fairly large crowd.

Call around NOLA area hotels that are reopen for business. Since Katrina and her domino effect problems for the city, NOLA so much needs to attract tourists, that area hotel rates might be to your liking.

If none are to be found there, try calling hotels in the Mandeville area; NOLA is a straight run down the Causeway bridge and from there, follow the "easy to read" signs to Canal Street and the French Quarter.

Don't despair if NOLA is out and so are rooms in Mandeville: look into the Mississippi casino hotels that are reopen; it's an hour's drive to NOLA, but it's not a bad one.

Intercontinental Hotel on St. Charles street. Most of the parade routes run in front of the hotel, your with in walking distance of all the main sites. I would rate it a five star hotel. Good luck and have fun.

Where to stay depends on why you are going. If you are going for the parades, stay on St Charles. If you are going for Bourbon and partying, stay on Bourbon. During the parades it is difficult to cross canal from St Charles and the parade route to get to Bourbon and the parties. We like to stay at the Astor-Crowne on the corner of Bourbon and Canal. We can see parades on Canal and walk out the side door for partying on Bourbon.
