They seemed to become more popular after kids started getting attacked. 'TOUGH' types seem to own them now. Dont they read or hear about kids getting attacked? What are they on? (im sure some of these dogs are well natured)

Isnt the agression in these dogs the problem? Are these tough types not just increasing that problem? Should they be allowed to own them as they are dangerous? Should they be licensed?

I think i meant Pitt Bulls!

What i meant to say is that these tough types are misinformed about the apparent agression in these dogs and therefore they propogate a situation where these 'type' of dogs are made to be aggressive.

Therefore a potential owner should need a license to own a dog. Dogs maybe should also be classified and therefore potential owners would need to meet certain standards (house size, owned a dog b4 etc) for certain classification of dogs.

I am a massive animal lover, especially dogs.

are you talking about bull terriers or bit bulls? pit bulls are more trained for attacking but can be very well behaved dogs. bull terriers on the other hand although strange looking, i haven't heard anything bad about them. Target stores love him as their mascot.

bull terriers are actually normall very people friendly dogs and in the right hands are very nice pets. I know of 2 who are PAT dogs and visit people in old people's homes and hospitals. However, when the wrong sorts of people get them to fulfill an image, usually low intelligence people with inferiority complexes I might add, who do not train or socialise their dogs, then you have problems. That being the case, it wouldn't really matter what breed of dog they got, it would turn out the same, untrained, no respect for anyone, out of control. Sadly most of the bullies sold to the sorts of people who get them to boost their image, eventually end up in rescue centres or put to sleep because they get out of control. I think there should be stricted criteria as to who can get a dog in the first place and if compulsory 3rd party insurance and some sort of licence was compulsory, then perhaps it would put the chavs off getting any dog. Since the chavs types wouldn't bother buying a licence, it should be the law that anyone breeding a litter, HAD to have the pups microchipped and the info passed to a central agency, and if they had to sell the pups with 3rd party insurance and pass the cost on to the new owners, it might help too. As things stand, any moron can go out and buy a dog even if they don't have the right skills, or inclination to care for the dog properly. Dog ownership should not be a right, it should be a priviledge. Sadly, some dogs just don't deserve the sorts of owners they end up with.

I own a four month old English Bull Terrier after doing extensive research into the breed and breeder. I can say out of all the dogs I have owned he is the loveliest, friendliest and loyal dog I have had. I resent the stigma that is attached to these breeds. I am responsible and rear my dog likewise, I have children and will not have them anywhere near a dangerous dog. Please remember it is not the dogs fault it is the responsibility of the owner to produce a sociable dog. Yes I agree dog owners should have a license and attend dog training classes, all responsible owners do this already though.

As with all breeds of dogs they have the potential to become aggressive if they are mistreated or trained to do so. If you bring your dog up well, socialise him from a puppy and do not encourage him to bite etc. then you will have a happy and loyal companion.

However there a brainless idiots out there who think they look hard with a bull terrier and they abuse the animal. Making it un predictable and aggressive.
This is a great shame because they love the company of people and are very loyal family pets, I have a Staff in my family who is a credit to the breed.
Unfortunately, like having children they is no law that checks your level of intelligence before you are able to have one.

If brought up properly, any bull breeds (English bull terriers, Staffordshire bull terriers, etc) can be wonderful family pets.... often being very affectionate towards children. Any dog that is brought up to guard or be aggressive has the potential to attack. I am a massive fan of both English bull terriers and Staffordshire bull terriers and have only ever owned and met very friendly and gentle examples of the breeds. I would sooner trust a well brought up bull breed with a child than a jack russel type dog!!

Why? Because pit bulls are the superior wiggle butts of the dog world!!! Because they LOVE their owner, are intelligent, athletic, silly, and devoted. Not to mention absolutely stunning physically. They didn't "just become popular"! This is a very old type of breed and used to be the most popular family dog. Helen Keller, Theodore Roosevelt, Thomas Edison, Steve Irwin, Micheal J. Fox, Orlando Bloom, Linda Blair, and many more have all owned or own pit bulls!!! And Pete the Pup from Our Gang (the Little Rascals) was a registered American Pit Bull Terrier!!!

Please read below......

In recent years, pit bulls have gained more than just a foothold in the public awareness. Unscrupulous breeding and negative media attention have resulted in many apartment complexes, neighborhoods and even counties imposing bans on the breed, citing them as "inherently dangerous" to the public.
But did you know that pit bulls, despite the fact that they were originally bred to fight with each other, were also bred to be trustworthy and friendly to people? These dogs actually earned the nickname "nursemaid's dog," because they were so reliable with young children.

Today, however, the breed often attracts the worst kind of dog owners--those who are only interested in them for fighting or protection. It's a shame what has happened to this loyal and affectionate breed-but as the pit bull population has increased so rapidly, shelters are now struggling to deal with an overflow of image-plagued, hard-to-place dogs. And despite its illegality, people are still training and breeding pit bulls to participate in dog fights in cities and towns across the country.

Sometimes these dogs are in fact well natured but a lot of times the disposition of the dog is to do with its breeding...added to this a lot of the moronic cretins that think they are hard to own them and make them even more aggressive by encouraging them to be aggressive and even going as far as training them to be that way then you have a recipe for disaster. I don't think they care whether the breed of dog they chose has a bad rep or not, in fact I think that is what is attractive to them...just lately there seems to have been an influx of these breeds in UK which can only serve to demonstrate how many more attacks will happen.

no longer below maximum regulations. they are interior the comparable "relatives" of dogs descended from the unique bull-and-terrier inventory alongside with Staffordshire Bull Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers, American Pit Bull Terriers, Miniature Bull Terriers, and the Boston Terrier, yet regularly breed bans word just to the AmStaff and APBT, and %. up the Staffy by way of fact they are bodily comparable in visual attraction. The noticeably distinctive head-piece of the Bull Terrier could be adequate to get you around the breed ban - yet i'd nonetheless ensure you get a purebred, registered dogs and take care of those information in case it grew to become into ever puzzled.

i think that bull terrier breeds get a bad press from people like you! and i think that you are damn out of order saying that popularity has increased after those children got injured, my staff is three years old and has never come incontact with a baby or toddler before, about 3 months ago my boyfriends sister came round to our new house she has two young children one that can walk and one that crawls, my dog was as good as gold he sat there while they climbed all over him an tugged on his ears. He didnt even look at either of them in the wrong way, i have also lived with a english bull terrier (not so good with children, but no young children in the house!!!! And doesnt get walked off lead or in parks!!!) And i have also been in contact with pit bulls (dont like other dogs but good with children!!) Plus people that own bull terrier breed owners donot think that they are "Hard" they just love and understand the breed you get more dic* heads walking alsations thinking that they are hard than people that own staffs!!! But i do agree that people need to read up on breeds in more detail before they go and purchase a puppy yes all bull breeds are cute when they are puppies but they do take alot of time to train and socilise. So what does that say to you, i think that it shows you that they are all brilliant breeds and i wouldnt change my staff for the world he is my and my boyfriends everything!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have a cross staffordshire bull terrier and he hasn't got a bad bone in his body. I think its the way the dog is treated by it owner. Some people want these dogs as status symbles and make them aggressive. I would never leave any dog alone with a child as even when they are playing they can do harm without meaning to. By the way pit bull are on the dangerous dog list I think.
