Yes I'm on Lithium and Bipolar. It has been the best med for me. Many people do experience negative side effects with it, but it has had the least horrible side effects out of all the mood stabilizing medicines. I have gained a little weight (10 lbs) but I don't know if I can attribute that all to the med. Also, it does effect me cognitively. I'm more forgetful and sometimes slower to think, but it is much better than the other meds I've been on for it. If you can tolerate Lithium, it is a wonderful med. If not, it can be a nightmare.

My husband is bi-polar and used to be on Lithium. I have been his carer for over 15 years.Lithium is good when in the manic phase.
Apart from thirst that bloated feeling and weight gain, having to have blood tests every few months is a real off putting disadvantage. I think lithium is necessary to even out the mood swings and is beneficial when first diagnosed and very ill.
After that I think other types of medication deserves considering. Use Lithium only as a last resort. It's important to have check ups. I would get my husband to have reviews and check ups to make sure you're on the right dose and tyoe of medication that is right for you. In theraputic doses Lithium is very necessary as part of the stabalising requirement. and it has helped a lot of people who suffer. As with all medications-there are side effects.

I was on it for eight months a few years ago. It has helped me a great deal, and now I'm on minimum medication. The only side effect I can recall was being very agressive and short-tempered. I fainted a few times and my temperature was difficult to control, but generally, I'd do it all again for the help it gave me. Certianly did the trick!

Not me, but my brother is schizophrenic. He has taken it for years. It's the only thing that has kept him out of mental hospitals.
