If someone looks like he could use a meal, be warned: Giving him a sandwich in a Las Vegas park could land you in jail.
The Las Vegas City Council passed an ordinance that bans providing food or meals to the indigent for free or a nominal fee in parks.
Mayor Oscar Goodman "This is not a punishment; this is to help people," "The people who provide sandwiches have good intentions, but they're enabling people not to get the help that is needed."
What a crock o' ****!
If they REALLY wanted to help these people you would be following the meal wagons around and signing the people up for services. This isn't about helping the homeless, it is about getting them out of sight so they don't interfere with Vegas' main business, shaking down the tourist for every dollar they can get and pouring it into the casinos pockets.
This was a friendlier, more compassionate place when the mob ran it.

Commentator Bill Moyers said that every time someone "begged" from him he would give that person a dollar. He never passed anyone with acknowledging their presence & giving the buck.
I think the mayor of Los Vegas is well intentioned but wrong. We can't make our poor & marginalized invisible to the society in general.
Put mustard on my sandwich! :-)

You are right, it is all about clearing the homeless out of the park - it has nothing to do with them making an effort.
Let's face it, when have politicians ever been compassionate to anyone if it wasn't for a sound byte or their photos in the press? Come on now! Politicians have never had to work a day in their lives and they all were born with silver spoons - least most of them were - they don't have a clue, nor do they care, about anyone but their own self interests.

If I lived in Las Vegas, I'd give a sandwich to every single homeless person I could find, just to make a point.

I believe politicians generally can not be trusted to help anyone but the rich and powerful. They take advantage of the poor and meek and crap all over them every chance they get.

it's their way of getting the homeless people there to leave.
If they do not get handouts, they will go somewhere else where they will.
I give a homeless man near my office money everytime I see him. I see him a lot more frequently now.

That is just odious. Can you get an email address for the mayor so we can petition for a change in that ordinance?

Good point. I'd rather give food, that way I know it was for good. You give $$, then it can be used for whatever. I think you are right... keep them out of sight and out of mind.
