It's just the quickest way to acknowledge that you have seen what has happened. It's a way of opening up the conversation and allowing the person in pain to talk about *how* sore it was, how they are feeling etc. It's a kind question, not a stupid one.

after my wife had our baby she went to the 6 week check and the doc asked how she was. she replied "when i sit on the floor to change babies bum, my ankles are siezing and become very sore and stiff" to the Doctors reply of "dont sit on the floor!!!! " hmm great Dr.

I find it incredible that when some one has a serious accident people say ' you were LUCKY it was not more serious'.... people look the word lucky up in the dictionary!
