I know Jews don't, and Muslims don't, I guess because they follow the Jews, I thought Christians should not : Jesus Christ was a Jew, so he did not eat it. Should Christians not follow this???? (Also in the Bible Jesus puts the Demons in the Pigs). I am not sure as to why it is forbidden in each religion can you shed some light.

Thanks!

We Christians are no longer held to those dietary laws as of Acts 10:9. And on the next day, whilst they were going on their journey, and drawing nigh to the city, Peter went up to the higher parts of the house to pray, about the sixth hour. 10 And being hungry, he was desirous to taste somewhat. And as they were preparing, there came upon him an ecstasy of mind.

11 And he saw the heaven opened, and a certain vessel descending, as it were a great linen sheet let down by the four corners from heaven to the earth: 12 Wherein were all manner of fourfooted beasts, and creeping things of the earth, and fowls of the air. 13 And there came a voice to him: Arise, Peter; kill and eat. 14 But Peter said: Far be it from me; for I never did eat any thing that is common and unclean. 15 And the voice spoke to him again the second time: That which God hath cleansed, do not thou call common.

Pork was forbidden for the Jews and the Muslims. I think this was so because pork carried a worm that caused trichonosis. It was only safe to eat if it was cooked all the way, and in old times people often did not cook meat all the way. They also did not know that they needed to cook pork all the way to avoid this illness. Many people got sick, so it was banned as a religeous practice because this was the only way to do it.

It was common for them not to eat any unclean animals, But when Grace came in Acts 10:12-15 Wherein were all manner of fourfooted beasts of the earth, & wild Beasts, & creeping things, & fowls of the air. 13: And There came a voice to him, (RISE, PETER: KILL & EAT) 14: But Peter said, not so, Lord, for I have never eaten anything that is common or unclean. 15:And the voice spake unto him again the 2nd. time, (WHAT GOD HATH CLEANSED, THAT CALL NOT THOU COMMON. You can also read some on this in Romans 14:14 There is no meat today that is unclean to eat, as long as we ask God to Bless the food. There is also many more verses I could have used.

God Almighty has forbidden the consumption of swine to Muslims except in a life or death situation. Generally, the main reason we do not eat pork or anything from a pig is because God has prohibited it. Other reasons (i.e. uncleanliness, pigs were once a tribe of people cursed by God, they eat their own feces, they don't care if other pigs share their spouses, etc.) are secondary to the primary reason that God told us not to.

The reason for not eating pork is that they eat and live off the filth of other animals. That is the prohibition of not eating pork is rationalized. Pigs are seen as unclean animals therefore their meat is unclean. For a christian perspective on this see: http://www.abcog.org/food.htm

Question:

Why is the eating of pork forbidden in Islam?

Answer:

The fact that consumption of pork is prohibited in Islam is well known. The following points explain various aspects of this prohibition:

1. Pork prohibited in Qur’an

The Qur’an prohibits the consumption of pork in no less than 4 different places. It is prohibited in 2:173, 5:3, 6:145 and 16:115.

"Forbidden to you (for food) are: dead meat, blood, the flesh of swine, and that on which hath been invoked the name of other than Allah." [Al-Qur’an 5:3]

The above verses of the Holy Qur’an are sufficient to satisfy a Muslim as to why pork is forbidden.

2. Pork prohibited in the Bible

The Christian is likely to be convinced by his religious scriptures. The Bible prohibits the consumption of pork, in the book of Leviticus

"And the swine, though he divide the hoof, and be cloven footed, yet he cheweth not the cud; he is unclean to you".

"Of their flesh shall ye not eat, and their carcass shall ye not touch, they are unclean to you."
[Leviticus 11:7-8]

Pork is also prohibited in the Bible in the book of Deuteronomy

"And the swine, because it divideth the hoof, yet cheweth not the cud, it is unclean unto you. Ye shall not eat of their flesh, nor touch their dead carcass."
[Deuteronomy 14:8]

A similar prohibition is repeated in the Bible in the book of Isaiah chapter 65 verse 2-5.

3. Consumption of pork causes several diseases

The other non-Muslims and atheists will agree only if convinced through reason, logic and science. Eating of pork can cause no less than seventy different types of diseases. A person can have various helminthes like roundworm, pinworm, hookworm, etc. One of the most dangerous is Taenia Solium, which is in lay man’s terminology called tapeworm. It harbours in the intestine and is very long. Its ova i.e. eggs, enter the blood stream and can reach almost all the organs of the body. If it enters the brain it can cause memory loss. If it enters the heart it can cause heart attack, if it enters the eye it can cause blindness, if it enters the liver it can cause liver damage. It can damage almost all the organs of the body.

Another dangerous helminthes is Trichura Tichurasis. A common misconception about pork is that if it is cooked well, these ova die. In a research project undertaken in America, it was found that out of twenty-four people suffering from Trichura Tichurasis, twenty two had cooked the pork very well. This indicates that the ova present in the pork do not die under normal cooking temperature.

4. Pork has fat building material

Pork has very little muscle building material and contains excess of fat. This fat gets deposited in the vessels and can cause hypertension and heart attack. It is not surprising that over 50% of Americans suffer from hypertension.

5. Pig is one of the filthiest animals on earth

The pig is one of the filthiest animals on earth. It lives and thrives on muck, faeces and dirt. It is the best scavenger that I know that God has produced. In the villages they don’t have modern toilets and the villagers excrete in the open air. Very often excreta is cleared by pigs.
