She likes romance, walks and candle lit places with amazing views. Money is not endless but I am not afraid of spending.

You've got lots of great options to choose from: Central Park, Rockefeller Center, Empire State Bldg, etc....

Tavern on the Green is pretty tired these days, and the food is nothing to write home about (especially for the price). The Central Park location is what keeps it popular. Allow me to suggest a couple of restaurants with terrific romantic atmosphere and good food, too, for before, during or after the proposal.

One If by Land, Two If by Sea: 17 Barrow St. (between Seventh Ave. South and 4th St.), http://www.oneifbyland.com/

Blue Hill: 75 Washington Place (between Sixth Ave. and MacDougal St.), http://www.bluehillnyc.com/

As for where to stay, if you don't mind paying $500+ per night, the most amazing (and quirky) place is the Soho House. It's a private club, but their rooms can be rented by the public. The rooms are unforgettably stunning! In the very trendy Meatpacking District, 29-35 Ninth Avenue

For very traditionally elegant (and expensive) hotel options: the Pierre and the Mandarin Oriental, both of which border Central Park, are amazingly luxurious and have great views.

If you're looking to spend a little less, I recommend the W Hotels -- they're not kidding about the "Heavenly Bed" -- you might just have trouble getting out of it! I've stayed at the Times Square W, but there are at least 3 others in Manhattan. They often have good promotional rates. http://www.starwoodhotels.com/whotels/index.html

Ok there are so many places to propose in New York at Christmas, the city looks amazing at that time of year and it wont be hard to find the romance in it all. As suggested by some of the people before me it would be lovely to propose in a horse and carriage ride through central park at night time or under the christmas tree. The empire state building would have great views but i personally don't think its a very romantic spot!

I'm not sure about accommodation as I have family out there who have put me up on my visits but I hear the Chelsea is a really nice hotel.

The Waldorf Astoria - has a real romantic feel to it - loads of history.

Could propose on the boat over to the Statue of Liberty - about a fiver each, or in a horse and carriage going round central Park - that costs about £35 for half an hour.

Spend the money on the ring - she has to wear it forever so you want it to be something special.

Another idea could be to take her to Tiffany's with a budget in mind, ask her and then get her to choose her ring.

Good luck!

Plan a romantic evening NY is a great place to propose congratulations! How about at Rockerfeller Centre, go ice skating and then go to the Christmas tree lighting ceremony at Rockerfeller held on the first Sunday (i think its sunday) after Thanksgiving (which is the fourth sunday in november) Put the engagement ring inside a christmas decoration and give it to her to open. Then go on a horse and carridge ride through central park and then the the starlight room for dinner, and then check into the most posh hotel you can find!

CONGRATS!

I was in NYC recently and the most romantic beautiful view of Manhattan is from Brooklyn. It is also incredibly romantic to walk across the Brooklyn Bridge (one way only, it's a little long!)
The promenade in Brooklyn Heights was featured by Woody Allen in his film Manhattan. It is drop dead gorgeous. Plenty of very cute restaurants in Brooklyn Heights, of all prices. You will always have a soft spot for Brooklyn after this!
My tip is to go around 4 or 5 ish, when the light starts to fade and watch the lights come up in Manhattan!
Have dinner, pop the question, return to the promenade.
Good Luck!

Propose at sunset on the top of the Empire State Building - as per An Affair to Remember (although that was Valentines Day)

Don't know where to stay other than the Waldorf Astoria.

The Edison is a great hotel:

But if you want really quirky, try the legendary Chelsea: http://www.hotelchelsea.com/

As for the right spot to propose, how about a carriage ride in Central Park or during a spot of ice skating at the Rockefeller Centre?

A classic place would be Tavern on the Green. It's beautiful and you walk through Central Park to get there. (or you can take a taxi or carriage ride.)
The Cloisters are pretty, but you'd be cold in December!
If she likes art, you could take her to see her favorite painting or sculpture and propose in front of it. This would be a very public proposal, of course.
It's nice that you're putting a lot of thought into this. That's what will mean the most to her. Best wishes to you both!
