Im guessing you are sellinf a private plate but keeping the vehicle. In this case, you need to give the DVLA a ring.

If you had the vehicle from brand new and it was first registered with your private plate then the DVLA will assign a new registration to the vehicle appropriate to its age.

If the vehicle was pre registered when you bought it and you transfered the reg to it, the DVLA will simple re assign the old registration to it.

Either way you will probably have to pay for new plates to be made up and beware, the DVLA have no sense of urgency, so you may want the private reg to be taken off your car and the old registration put back on it, prior to sellin the private reg, or you may find yourself stuck having sold one but not recieved the other - you don't wanna be driving around illegally!!

You'll have to transfer the registration to the new owner's vehicle through the DVLA, who will automatically issue you with a new number and new tax-disc and V5c (registration document) when the transfer is completed. You will probably get a confirmation letter and tax-disc first, with the V5c a few days later.

When you get the confirmation of transfer you need to take that plus proof of your ID to an authorised number-plate supplier (e.g. Partco, Halfords, local motor factors) and get new plates made up, and fit them to your car, display the new disc, and (I think) return the old disc to the DVLA. The new owner of your old number will probably get their confirmation of transfer on the same day.

The DVLA website (http://www.dvla.gov.uk/) has all the details you should need.

If you use an agency to sell your number, they will handle the paperwork, and may also offer to provide your new plates (at a price), or may leave you to get the new plates. However, it will still be the DVLA that will confirm that the transfer is complete.

When you sell your plate, it will either be put on retention or subject to cherish transfer. Both of these actions involve the DVLA so check out their website for more info.

Either way, the DVLA will allocate you a new plate once the transfer has taken place.
