When a computer of a friend boots up it loses sound.

It comes up with an error that says (i paraphrase): 'the sound card is not installed or maybe in use by another program'

Once you reinstall the software for Creative Soundblaster it works until you restart the computer.

No programs were installed (under users knowledge) since the sound disabled.

Dell support advised disabling all the start-up programs but this has not made a difference. As it is a software and not hardware problem they won't guarantee it.

Can anybody suggest other ideas?

The most likely cause of this is because it's a Dell, the sound will be on-board (e.g. part of the motherboard.)
When the PC boots up, press F2 and go to the system setup (BIOS.) Check in the Advanced section to make sure "on-board AC-97 sound" or "On-board Audio" is enabled. If not then simply enable it then save&exit the BIOS setup!

What seems to be happening is when you install the driver software, it can detect there is indeed a valid soundcard and it works for that session. However, if the card is disabled in the BIOS, Windows does not automatically see the device on the reboot and gives you the false impression the sound card is faulty.

Hope that helps.

the 1st ingredient i'd do is examine administration panel > sound and audio contraptions to verify no longer something is muted. in case you plug the headphones decrease back in and you get sound, then that is probable no longer the sound card. i be responsive to you probable checked all of this, yet i will point out it besides... some desktops have on-board sound on the MB besides to a sound card. subsequently you will have 2 achieveable "eco-friendly" output ports to plug interior the cable. ensure you're making use of the mind-blowing one if it incredibly is the case. additionally, some modems have ports for sound additionally. ensure you're actually not mistakenly making use of considered one of those. I had an occasion the place I fastened someones computing gadget at my abode and each thing worked completely. while the guy introduced it abode he mentioned he had no sound. I went via each and every thing back just to verify that the audio gadget he grew to become into making use of had a turn on them to compliment an "enter gadget." Do your audio gadget have this form of swap? finally, if all else fails i'd purely reinstall the sound card drivers. you probable have them on a disc that got here with the computing gadget. If no longer you will get them from Gateway or Realtek.

Check in device manager if your sound card is detected by windows. If shows up in Device Manager then double click on it to check if the device is working properly or it needs updated drivers.

Also the possiblity could be sound card is damanged so try replacing it with a new sound card.

This should fix your problem.
