A psychiatrist is a Doctor. They went to medical school, became a doctor and then went back to school to be a Psychiatrist. They are able to prescribe drugs where as a Psychologist is not. A Psychologist generally has a Masters in Psychology but some have a PhD. Their focus is on long term counseling. They cannot diagnose a mental illness where as a Psychiatrist can.

A psychiatrist is a physician who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders.
Description
Psychiatrists treat patients privately and in hospital settings through a combination of psychotherapy and medication. Their training consists of four years of medical school, followed by one year of internship and at least three years of psychiatric residency. Psychiatrists may receive certification from the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN), which requires two years of clinical experience beyond residency and the successful completion of a written and an oral test. Unlike a medical license, board certification is not legally required in order to practice psychiatry.
Psychologist
psychologist is a scientist and/or clinician who studies psychology, the systematic investigation of the human mind, including behavior and cognition. Psychologists are usually categorized under a number of different fields, the most well-recognized being clinical psychologists, who provide mental health care, and research psychologists, who collect, investigate and analyze aspects of human behavior.
To put in a short version Psychologist are board certified and Psychiatrist do not have to be certitied

Psychiatrists train as doctors first, then go on to specialise as a psychiatrist. They are generally the people who work within mental health units, and they hire separate psychologists.
A psychiatrist can distribute medication and specialist care, and can refer people to mental health wards.
Generally, a psychiatrist is more about the chemisty and the doctor-side of things.
A psychologist trains in psychology, and is much more about the mental aspect. They look at childhood traumas, abnormality, and generally do studies and work into why people are who they are.

A psychologist has at least one degree and specialized training in counseling and can help with the vast majority of people's mental health issues.
A Psychiatrist also has an MD, and can prescribe drugs, and they tend to specialize in more serious mental illnesses---schizophrenia, bi-polar disorder, etc.

Psychiatrist deals with diseases of the mind, like bi-polar, schizo, etc. and can prescribe drugs. They are MDs, with specialization in psychiatry. Usually, they just push drugs on you.
Psychologists deal with patterns of thinking, or perceptions, not necessarily stemming from the above diseases. Often improvements in interpersonal skills are sought after by seeing this type of professional. They are usually not MDs, and can not prescribe drugs.
