In the United States, it's up to the individual states as to whether cousins can marry. I've posted a couple of links down below that will give you some answers. One is the main page for a cousin-cousin relationship support group, the second is the listings of which states allow cousin-cousin marriage and those that do not. I believe some states only allow cousin-cousin marriage if there is a promise form the couple not to have children or if the cousins are not first cousins (as in the example that you gave).
As for it being accepted by society? I think you see from some of the other answers that you've already received that it is generally not accepted. There is no reason, however, for an entire community to know that a couple consists of counsins.
Birth defects? From the site I've already mentioned, "Second cousins have little, if any increased chance of having children with birth defects, per the book "Clinical Genetics Handbook”– courtesy of the March of Dimes." If it is the case that the children of second cousins have such a low chance of birth defect, then the further out you go (third, fourth cousins, etc.) the already low chance will just decrease.

It depends on the laws of the country you live in. It is fine in Canada but illegal in most States I think.
I respect to child birth you would need to be concerned about whether or not there are genetic problems in their shared family tree. They are more likely to appear when the gene pool gets smaller. Also if this is common in your family to marry cousins then it is even more likely for a genetic problem to show up.
I have to admit that my family was pretty intermarried until about 2 generations ago and they really haven't had any problems. It usually takes generations and generations of extremely closed breading to produce problems.
Socially, again it depend where you live. Some people thing it is socially and morally wrong for some reason particularly in Christian countries although I don't know why because in the bible you can marry your first cousin.
I think they may want to concider all these things and possible consult a doctor. Personally if they love each other I am happy for them. The don't have to tell people either. I have aunts and uncles who are married and are cousin and nobody know but close family. It isn't anybodies business.

Cousins can marry in certain areas of the country. Historically, many people have married their first and second cousins, especially if royal lineage was involved. Genetically speaking there is not much of a difference if you marry your 1st cousin or a complete stranger now, but in the past there were concerns about high rates of birth defects among offspring. However, it is considered socially incestuous by many to marry a relative nowadays.

Marriage between cousins is not universally accepted.
There will be problems with respect to childbirth.
Medical science says chances of medical disorder will be very high.
End of Love is not marriage only. Then can live together without marry and should not have children from their relation ship.
Enjoy Love and life

Well, the royals used to marry off their own cousins to themselves so there is nothing wrong with them but certain genes are kind of 1/2 genes which carry disease and if these two genes (e.g. two members of a family with same genes) meet (a.k.a. a child with another family member) there is chance of death in the child.
Besides from that, there is nothing wrong but it is rather not widely accepted practice, certainly not reccomended unless for resons unmentioned. My advice? Check with a doctor about the genes part.
P.S. The genes part is rare but it had happened like in the Russian royalty with the tzars.

That's really gross. No it's not acceptable by any means. It's really quite disgusting. Above anything else though, it is a proven fact that marriage within a family can cause the children to have serious mental and physical problems. These people should re-examine their lives and move on. I'm sure they could find someone else.

I don't think it's a community rule, as you put it, but rather, I've always heard there is the possibility of birth defects in children. Just telling you what I've always been told. If they are serious, I would check with a genetic's expert to find out what the downside of such a marriage is.

It is actually legal in some states for first cousins to marry(I believe each state is different)but as far as socially it is not really common practice and looked upon as "backwards" and strange in the U.S.

I know cousins that are married, and.......their oldest son has had major heart problems since birth.
Another pair of cousins were together for years, she wanted to break up and move on, he couldn't accept that and blew his brains out...in her truck.
