She may have a bladder infection or cystitis. It might be worth getting her checked by a vet. At her ages kidney and bladder infections occur. Clean the area with a biological washing solution to rid the area of the smell. Don't use vinegar as it smells like urine to animals. Then, when the area is dry, put a few drops of olbas oil or eucalyptus oil on it and she will avoid the area. You can buy olbas from most supermarkets and chemists.
Make sure you aren't putting her food and water anywhere near her litter tray.
Whatever you do, do NOT rub her nose in it, or hit her. It will noly make her afraid and confused.
I have no idea why people still rub animals noses in their mistakes. I thought this sort of abuse became obsolete when there was proper information about. It is cruel, it doesn't stop them doing it, it only makes them afraid of you.Ignorance and brute force as a training method, belongs in the dark ages.
Get her kidneys and bladder checked by a vet before you do anything else because if she has cystitis or a kidney infection, that may be whats causing the problem.
What sort of person would smack an elderly and possibly arthritic old cat for goodness sakes, and what sort of cruel owner would rub her nose on her mess? It's like abusing your granny grrrrrr.

Rubbing nose in filth doesn't work with cats. Don't do it. You just upset cat. She doesn't understand why you are doing this.
She could have been frightened by some other cat or other animal who came up to your house. Her urinating there may be trying to tell that animal-- back off, this is my house.
She may have a UTI. Old cats get them and they don't use the litter box, they just hold it (because it hurts) and hold it until they can't anymore.
Be sure to clean all soiled surfaces thoroughly. Use a special clean for cat mess. I like Natures Miracle, you can get it at big box pet stores. Label says you may have to use it twice. Label is right. On the rug she has soiled put one of those carpet runners with the gripper spikes up. When she puts one of her comfort loving paws on the little plastic spikes, it will remind her that this is not the place.

Sounds as if she is telling you she wants to go out, some cats need to be indoors because of heavy traffic or for health reasons and that is fine. Your cat, as a former stray may well miss the outdoors, but one thing you have to remember is that you are looking after this cat and feeding her, in truth, she has a good home. One thing you could try is to place a litter tray next to the door, that may help if you feel that you cannot let her outside

Did you move her litter lately? I did that and had the same problem with her peeing on the floor. you can buy pet odour remover and maybe if she can't smell it she won't do it any more. If you have a two story house maybe put another one on a floor that doesn't have one.
I heard many times to on here that people have suggested something wrong with the urinary track, who knows though could try talking with your vet to be on the safe side and for the sake of getting rid of the bad habit she is into too. Good luck.

She is probably sick. Could be bladder infection or worms. If you can afford it, take her to the vet. If they can't find anything wrong with her then you may want to find her a home out in the country where she can rome about.
I had a male stray cat. He was not fixed and ofcourse he sprayed in my house. I booted his little behind back outside. I think he likes it better out there anyhow. He will be getting a dog house to live in. I would have fixed him but I don't have the money and chances are even if he were to be fixed he would still spray.
I don't think female cats spray, but I could be wrong about that.
Good luck

Once a cat begins to do this they are brought back time and again because of the smell. I would try to wash it really well and then put some sort of citrus smell there. Cats do not like that for some reason.
If she's as old as you say she may need a trip to the vet to be sure she's okay.

I can't think why she does this unless she's unhappy about something, maybe she has a urinary problem. I've heard that some female cats can get cystitis if their diet contains too much dried food and too little water. A visit to the PDSA may be in order.

give your cat a break!!! she doesn't need to have her nose rubbed in it, & to the person who said 'get a new one' that is just awful!! your cat is in old age now, & is pobably suffering from mild incontinence, just the same way as old humans can. just look after her & help her live the last part of her life in cat luxury!! ( & you can buy good products to take the smell away). if it rerally bothers you why don't you ask your vet is there is anything you can do?
