Just recently I discovered that a "friend" of mine has genital warts. No Big deal yet my husband and I recently had sex with her (wearing a condom of course) she said she hasn't had an outbreak for 5 years, w/e anyway, does anyone know if you can get that by just licking her, and if there was a cut on a finger (you know) do I have any reason to worry? And is there really a diff. between herpes and warts, and if so what?

There is a big difference between genital herpes and warts. For one, they are two completely different viruses.

Genital warts is caused by HPV (Human Papilloma Virus), where genital herpes is caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV). Genital herpes cause large sores that can puss, scab and heal over. They are also usually REALLY painful and itchy. Genital warts are pretty small, usually appear in clusters, are flesh colored and do NOT puss.

Both of these viruses are spread by sex (vaginal, oral and anal) and by direct skin to skin contact with the area (like "dry humping" or rubbing genital areas together). Also, both of these viruses can be spread whether the person is on an outbreak or not.

I have personally had both viruses for over 5 years now. I (accidentally of course) spread genital herpes to my fiance (boyfriend at the time) when we first starting dating. I hadn't had an outbreak in almost 2 years and STILL spread it to him!

So, yes, you honestly should be concerned about getting either one of these viruses from her if she had either one of them. You and your husband can always go and get tested if you are really concerned. Herpes is usually diagnosed by a physical exam and a swab of the sores, but, if there are no sores present a blood test can be done. HPV is diagnosed with a pap smear for women, there is no test for HPV for men.

Be careful though, HPV Is NOT ALWAYS caught by doing a Pap Smear. I recommend asking your OBGYN for a specific HPV test. It is done relatively the same way as a Pap, but shows more cells than what a Pap would catch. Theirfore more effective.

A virus is a virus. You can get hpv from sex with a condom this is transmitted from skin to skin contact. You may want to get tested because hpv is a leading cancer of the cervix
