when her divorce is settled she might be able to move back in and keep the dog but until then she can't have him in her new apartment. she has water and food in the house and comes to check on the dog every 3 or 4 days but overwise the dog is locked in the house all day long. we called our local police but they said as long as the dog has food and water they couldn't do anything. today we noticed that the electricity is out, so now the dog is also in the dark. besides being incredibly cruel, is this legal? its a big german shepherd that has arthritis and isn't getting medicine for it either! should i call the police again or can i call the humane society? i just don't know what to do, i'm worried to death about this dog and i can't believe she is doing this!

she first had the dog in a kennel it got too expensive so she brought him back to the house. we have talked to her and told her that its cruel to leave the dog; and we told her that we called the police. i would like to break the window but that would be vandalism (i don't want to break the law) and then the dog would be loose and he isn't very friendly. i would offer to go in and let the dog outside a few times a day but i'm scared to death of the dog!

Everyone has been very helpful! I did email NBC and ABC and I also emailed our local newspaper last night after seeing all of the suggestions of getting the media involved. If I don't hear from anyone by tomorrow, I'm going to call the humane society and the ASPCA, I don't know if the police will be much help considering they have already been out once before and said there was nothing they could do. I'll keep everyone posted!

Call PETA, they would burn down or blow up the house for you.(So you can get the dog outside)

Call the Humane society as soon as possible. The poor dog has rights too. You may also want to bring the media in as well. In most cases the media will air/print the story and find the dog a good home with someone that will take better care of the dog. The woman should be charged with cruelty to animals in my eyes.

Well I'd definately call the humane society. Animal control will take it but for a limited time. Is there anyway you can ask the person who owns the dog if you can watch it for her until she comes back...it is very cruel to leave a dog in the house like that. It is crapping and peeing all over and that is unhealthy for the dog...call the humane society please...I had to call animal control once because this person moved out and left her animals unfed, unwatered and living in their own filth. In order for animal control to go into her home she would need to open the door for them...you can always tell her the dog cries loud everynight and you would be happy to take it until things straighten out...my heart goes out to you...from one animal rescuer to another..I can't believe the police are allowing the dog to do it's stuff all over the house...This just angers me...Please call the humane society..animals need fresh water and food everyday...she's a horrible pet owner..

I can not believe your local police will not do anything. Does this mean the dog is going to the bathroom in the house?? That is disgusting and cruel. I would call your local animal shelter or humane society and see if they have any suggestions. This is neglect as far as I am concerned and I think she should be arrested!!!!

I agree with di. Is there any chance that you would be willing to take care of the dog for her?? I know you are probably thinking that she wouldnt deserve to get the dog back, but maybe she won't. At least the poor dog would have you to help it out a little.
If that dosen't work, call the police back, then the aspca and who ever else you have to in order to get that dog taken care of!

Either call the Humane Society, Animal Control, or Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA). It may be that the dog is okay, but they will investigage to make that determination.

#1 dogs don't require electricity..
#2 as the police said as long as she is taking care of the dogs needs then it's pretty much out of your hands..
#3 if you are so concerned, maybe you should offer to keep the dog yourself until the situation is resolved..

The real problem is, even if the dog has food and water, if it is craping all over the house it's gonna become a cespool of disease and couold ultimately be unhealthy for the dog.

Society for the prevention of cruelty to animals might be able to do something, but if you want quick action, call your local news station.

Strongly recommend you call the S.P.C.A nearest you. Whatever you do, do not attempt to enter that house, or let that dog out, without proper authorization. You cannot begin to believe your liability here if you do.
