It was a wonderful match - I'm no prude - and they deserved to celebrate. But when watching Darren Clark down a pint of Guinness in one with encouragement from a baying crowd - I couldn’t help but think what would the media say if this was Wayne Rooney downing a pint of Stella in England won the World Cup - cries of binge drinking, setting a bad example etc....

Let get this straight gang - I am certainly not knocking Darren Clark at all - the man is an absolute legend both on and off the course and I have nothing but admiration for all he has been through with the tragic loss of his wife. The point I was making though is that with regards to post-victory celebrations there is one rule for 'middle class' sports (i.e. cricket and golf) and another for the rest (i.e. footballers).....

If anyone in the world deserves a drink its Darren Clarke given what hes been through recently. I take your Rooney point though it was yhe same with the ashes we embraced flintoff for going on a 24 hr binge. The difference is you don't tend to find the golfers and cricketers falling out of night clubs week in week out. Celebrating historic victories is fine.

I'd stay away from having a go at Darren Clarke, after what he's been through I'd say he deserved as many Guinness as he liked. Besides if having a drink with his team-mates went towards the camaraderie of the group then it got the job done. The Americans weren't that tight, so maybe they should have had a Bud or two and try to cooperate. A footballer is a completely different athlete compared to a golfer, the environment is different, golf is a mind game, football well take a look at Rooney does he have much of a mind?

Did not the England players celebrate after winning the Ashes. I don't think Flintoff or Pieterson have sobered up yet. Did not Liverpool players celebrate after winning the European Cup after being 3-0 down. Do not rugby players celebrate when they win in the six nations championship. If England should win the world cup in Rooney's time then as far as I am concerned Rooney could drink a brewery dry. No harm done and I don't think anyone has been adversely affected or likely to be.

Good question and some good answers. At the end of the question you ask "if England won the World Cup.."

Well if England won the World Cup I think you'd find the WHOLE COUNTRY going on a bender. And Just Like Flintoff after the Ashes victory, the players would be given pretty much free licence by the media to celebrate in any way they please.

I think the difference here is that none of these lads have been in the papers for anything other than normal stuff and are fairly well evolved to the point that that are coherent and intelligent. As oppose to Wayne who apparently likes the older women, can hardly string three intelligent words never mind a sentence together and who has a penchant for stamping on the oppositions nuts when things look to be going pear shaped.

Give yourself a shake man or change the dosage.

Darren Clarke is still coming to terms of losing his wife less than 6 weeks ago and you think he's setting a bad example ?.take a deep breath and think about it.
do you not think he is allowed a drink or two.Seeing him on the 16th green after his match ,i could have cried for him.The emotions he showed were heart felt.i actually thought the Americana's for a change were sporting losers and come out of it with a lot of credit.

Fantastic match,golf was the winner.

I asked you .How would you react in an occasion like that ?

Here you go man!!!

Darren Clarke !! Yes he lost his wife, but even otherwise, goddamm he played, the PUtt on 12th on sunday! My god !

I think the americans have just proven that they are conceted as a nation, they dont have a US national team worth its weight in any team sport. Whenever they play thier "SELF INVENTED TEAM SPORTS" its always "ALL AMERICAN" look at NFL, NHL, MLB, NBA its all thier own sports and thier own championships.

Its hightime they played real international sports as a team, SOCCER for example, its a global sport, why do they get shot out in the leagues.

At the Ryder cup, they proved that they were not a team , weak knuckle punches, no bonding, bad body language, it was all a mess ! Look at the fire Sergio & Lee Westwood carried, just to name the top 2 most fired. the eurpoeans at thier worst hugged eachother after a put went in, More often than not they stopped short of humping legs!
But our "AMERICANS" you didnt see a high five even. You cant win team sports without having that "to die for" spirit, not at this level.

I think they need to sit down and understand that there is a world beyond the red white and blue, 5.7Billion people live there and each and everyone is better than you! Ryder cup just proved that americans are all fart !

Reasons to celebrate. F1 drivers who win splash a lot of champagne, so does Stanley Cup winners. Do you think they should be splashing Coke or Pepsi! If the Americans would have won they would have done the same thing; and it is a good example to show how much joy the winner(s) have.
