You can buy a device that attaches to the toilet and 'locks' down the toilet lid. They are meant to keep young children out of the toilet and can be found at Toys-r-us or similar stores. Max, what a great name for your doggie!

Your dog is probably drinking from the toilet because his water dish isn't being kept full. We actually keep one dish in the kitchen for our Freddie and another in the bathroom. If both are full, he has no reason to look in the toilet.
Also, if Max can open the lid, a child safety lock is a good idea.

You can get this spray stuff in a lemon or lime type of taste. It is very sour and they hate it. You may want to put that on the toilet lid so that when he tries to open it he gets that taste in his mouth. It is the stuff they recommend for dogs that bite and chew on furniture. You can get it at Pet Smart and places like that. It worked for a Jack Russell we had a long time ago.

dogs like drinking out of the toilet because it is usually fresh cool water. Try refreshing the water in his bowl several times a day. you can also try putting something heavy on the lid of the toilet. I have never heard of this being dangerous for the animal though.(unless you put those little colored tabs in the water. I started putting icecubes in my dogs water bowl to help keep it cool (spoiled dog, I know).

It's bad if you're adding those chemical tablets to the tank. A regular toilet shouldn't hurt them. Despite my efforts, my dog has been drinking out of the toilet for 10+ yrs and he is fine.

Depends. I suggest keeping the door closed but if you are a forgetful person, then I suggest getting the child locks that you can buy at hardwear stores. It would just really suck if you couldn't get the lid up when you had to go really really bad. :]
Also, training is good, too.

They have these lid locks to keep kids out of toilets. Buy them, or keep the bathroom door shut.

If you never flush, puppy won't want to "drink" outta the toliet again........also, not allowing your dog to wander the house unwatched or unsupervised might help. A brick on the lid? Close the door perhaps? Gee, I can think of a few. Let us know which one worked! Good luck!

Make sure he has access to water in a water bowl and that he knows where it is. Maybe if you see him go to the toilet, say "no" and call him to his water bowl. Keeping the bathroom doors closed and water available all the time in water bowls should eventually get him into a better habit.

Keep something heavy on the lid, or get a new toilet seat with a heavier lid, not those foam ones.
