They can, but they are always difficult. If you are very young, they almost certainly will not, as both parties will keep changing and growing apart. If the relationship is a brief one before the separation (summer romance, for example) it is not likely to survive being apart. BUT I have friends who met when they were both graduate students and knew each other very well. They got engaged when he had a job in California, and she was teaching in Maine. They got married during the summer, and the next year SHE was in California, and he was in North Carolina! They eventually got jobs near each other and had two children and a very happy life together. But they were both close to 30 and very well acquainted before the separations began.

Distance between 2 hearts is not an obstacle, rather a great reminder of just how strong true love can be.
Contrary to what the cynics say, distance is not for the fearful, it is for the bold. It's for those who are willing to spend a lot of time alone in exchange for a little time with the one they love. It's for those knowing a good thing when they see it, even if they dont see it nearly enough..

Honestly, before this year I would have said NO! I am from Canada and by boyfriend Australia...and we met while playing sports in europe. Of course you can guess that the entire rest of the year, and summer was spent apart. I think that it 'working' or not depends on your level of seriousness and comitement. I am rediculously in love with my boyfriend so it seemed impossible but we are almost done...2 weeks to go! Anyway, it's HARD and MUCH money and time is spent on the phone, computer, etc. We recently got webcams and that has been awesome in seeing each other...just chatting, or dirtier...hee hee! Anyway, for us it has really confirmed the feelings that we have had. Together or not, we are stronger than ever. Best of luck!!!!!!

yes they can work..but the relation would have to be realy strong to survive...its all based on trust and if you cannot both trust..then it will not work..i was in a 3 year relationship with a guy from egypt.im in england! we got engaged in england..but..he told me just 2 weeks ago he was already married...i didnt have a clue..3 years and i knew nothing..and yes it hurts like someone is stabbing you in the heart..and yes i still love him..this wont go yet..so please be sure that you have the strength before going into any long distant relation..
