She seems happy and healthy and has had all her shots. she does have 'accidents' down in the basement but they only seem to happen when she gets pissed off that she is being left down there.(because she will do it if she has just been let in and I put her down there because we are going somewhere). We also have a five year old(fixed) male dog. The female has been the dominant of the two since the second day we had her.

Whenthis happened she was lying down infront of the fire and was relaxed at the time.

I would post this question again to see if you get a decent answer. I put this on my watchlist but I see that all the answers you got are not very good. I personally agree with you that it is worrying, but I really don't know why she did it. Being scared sounds like the most plausible answer.

I used to have a female dog who did that in protest of something. She thought we would notice it later (she was hiding it) and blame the younger dog. She was a very smart dog and would do anything to get the younger dog in trouble.
