Don't know if you're planning to cook dinner, but it sounds more like an hors deourves type of thing. If so, I suggest:
Quiche and Cucumber Salad.
You can get those little mini quiches. They have all different flavors. Just warm and serve.
Also, You can make a giant cucumber salad. Grab six of the hot house cucumbers or use a bunch of persian cucumbers. Just chop, and add a bell pepper, yellow pepper, some red onion and if you, like it tangy, a little jalepeno. Toss with Brianna's French Vinagrette or your favorite Italian dressing and serve. Cucumber is cheap, and it's light on the stomache-good for a party.
Swedish Meatballs are always good, too or a vegetable platter and a cheese/cracker platter.
The above foods are healthy, light and easy to handle for guests. All taste good with cocktails and they are middle of the road foods as opposed to getting something people might not like (like sushi)
Now, where's my Martini?

finger foods are the general rule. Forty is not too many so make some kind of eatable centerpiece. It usually comes down to eight hour'dorves/person/every two hours. That is a nibble every fifteen minutes. Make fruit kebabs that can be skewered into a pineapple for a center. They are easy to hold and don't require much work other than cutting. Stay away from dips if your concerned about people double dipping or making a mess. Sauces and dressing are awful at parties as well. The only liquid should be in a drink.
if it is in your home. make sure to clear off every table and level surface. this way guest can park a small plate anywhere like fireplace mantle, coffee tables, sideboards ect. Also a great thing to do is take paper clips and attach small tags to them. then attach to your wine glasses. Then people won't loose thier goblets. Keep beverages and food in seperate areas so people will have to mover through the party to get to them and not stagnate in one area. Place surprises around your house to encourage people to move about. Like a plate of fortune cookies on a small table get people to read them alloud with the wording, in bed at the end of the sentance. In a different room a bowl of exotic jelly beans, then get people to guess the flavours.

A variety of appetizers! Swedish meatballs, those little cocktail franks in BBQ sauce, fruit trays, veggie trays, little sandwiches, shrimp platters, bread bowl dips, meat and cheese platters, hummus and chips, tortilla rollups, mixed olive platter, deviled eggs, bruchetta?
A couple punch bowls, maybe with different flavors? Some people may not want to drink a cocktail. Hope this helps.

Mini cream puffs are perfect !!!
They can be made ahead of time and filled with ANYTHING you can dream up ! I like the chicken salad or the crab/seafood salad stuffed ones !
They appear to be quite fancy which then make your guests think you went all out when really they bake up in a short amount of time. I can't believe people actually order out for these instead of make them themselves...Crazy !
You can make extra and fill them with a dessert filling such as a mousse or even strawberry whipped cream and drizzle some chocolate over them.... VOILA.... two courses out of one thing!!
Have fun !! : )

Sliced up gourmet sausages. I think mainly finger food is ideal in this setting because anything that requires cutlery is awkward. You can also go cheap this way as things such as buffalo wings and stuffed mushrooms don't cost a whole lot when prepared at home.

I agree with chefgrill. Everything is easy and quick and tasty. Remember to have some salty things to eat as people will be drinking.
