I was DXed at 6 also but you need to get in touch with an Endocrinologist and most good hospitals have diabetes education centers. Things have changed a lot over 32 years but each person is different and without knowing likes and dislikes of foods it is difficult to say but the dietitian there can give you some advice to use as guidelines.

Check out some of the diabetic web sites, there are also many diabetic cook books available at book stores, you have to watch carbohydrates, like starchy foods, pasta, potatoes etc. Also no drinks with sugar in them, and you have to watch foods which contain natural forms of sugar, apples, peas, carrots, corn which also contains starch and sugar, you also have to be aware of problems if the sugar drops too low, hopefully you have a meter so you can keep a good watch on her sugar levels, keep hard candy or orange juice on hand and give a small glass of juice if the sugar level drops too low, I would also talk to your family doctor as they can set you up with a nutritionist to help with proper diet and proportions to feed. Your daughter has type 1 diabetes which means she will have it the rest of her life, it is important to control diet as diabetes affects alot of the internal organs.

The best advice I can give you is to consult with your family doctor, first and foremost. He can give you all the literature and avenues you need to explore to keep your daughter healthy. Seeing a diabetic counselor and dietician on a regular basis is extremely important. Learn to give the shots, know the ins and outs of her medication, the symptoms and side effects of hyper and hypoglycemia so that you will know when she is having a problem. Most importantly, don't treat her like an invalid. Make her proactive also. She's not too young to learn how to deal with this. She'll be living with it the rest of her life so give her the tools to do just that, deal with and do it well.

Please get with a dietitian ASAP as this could be life threatening. So many things are considered sugar that you would not think of. Juice , corn, pea's, anything that has flour, (mac & cheese).you would never give your daughter anything to hurt her and it would be so sad if it happened just because you did not know. Look in the phone book for a local diabeties group and get as much info as you can. Being a diabetic child is much more dangerous than it is with an adult.

The best thing for you to do is go to a diet inst so she/he can put her on the proper diet and help you with which foods she can have and also put her on the proper calorie diet but as for which food she can have depending on bad her diabetes is she can have mostly everything everyone else have but IN A VERY SMALL AMOUNT compared to everyone else plate and it going to be hard for you and her. You can also contact the ADA and they can send you information on diabetes and the diet they have to follow. Good luck and GOD bless you.

Because your daughter is sooo young for diabetes, may I suggest that you see a nutritionist for complete meal ideas so that you are sure to get the right guidance for her needs. To be a diabetic so young without the proper training can shorten her life. So, please see a professional for this one.
