Don't listen to her, the original carrot was purple, scientist added beta carotene for vitiman A, hence the orange color. There are even white carrots also.

I don't know about the original colour. I think there must be types of carrots, like there are purple and white onions, say.

I personally have seen red ones (in india, they're super sweet and much softer easier to eat than the orange ones), orange ones and dark purple (almost black).

Here's what wikipedia says:

Eastern carrots were domesticated in Central Asia, probably in modern-day Afghanistan in the 10th century or possibly earlier. Those of the eastern carrot that survive to the present day are commonly purple or yellow in color, and often have branched roots. The purple color common in these carrots comes from anthocyanin pigments.

The Western carrot emerged in the Netherlands in the 15th or 16th century, its orange color making it popular in those countries as an emblem of the House of Orange and the struggle for Dutch independence. The orange color results from abundant carotenes in these cultivars. While orange carrots are nearly ubiquitous in the West, other colors do exist, including white, yellow, red, and purple. These other colors of carrot are raised primarily as novelty crops.

Check out the photo on wikipedia of all the different colours.

Did you know that the carrot's attractive orange colour did not make its appearance until the nineteenth-century when merchants urged agronomists to create a more appealing carrot for their stalls? So, starting out with a beige colour more reminiscent of the parsnip, the carrot eventually came to have its orange appearance.

The color was probably changed by the south-east Asians and Indians who grew it, as the original carrots have a very strong flavor.

The roots of wild carrots (Daucus carotta), which are one of the most common roadside plants around here, are mostly whitish to cream-coloured. There are a large variation of colours from white to purple (going through all the reds and yellows). It's said that the orange coloured carrot was developed to celebrate the Dutch Royal family (House of Orange) on the occasion of a royal wedding in the 19th century.
