If neither person has the virus and both stay faithful to each other than no, it can't be contracted.
If a person has HPV before the relationship, or a person cheats or is unfaithful during the relationship, then they can contract it and bring it back to their partner.
HPV doesn't just "appear" though. A person MUST have it before they can spread it.

It is possible that one partner could have contracted it long ago and it has lain dormant for years. They are considered carriers and eventually can build up an immunity to it and no longer be contagious. There are about 40 strains of HPV and most are relatively harmless and don't last long. I read once that it is estimated that 75% of sexually active people will have some form of HPV in their lifetime.

Yes it can. If one person has HPV (the virus that causes genital warts) or has had warts in the past, they can spread it to another person.
You don't have to have active warts to pass it on to someone (just like with Herpes)...you just have to have had them in the past.
And, it is possible to have genital warts and not known it. It can cause one small lesion that might go un-noticed and go away on its own. But, the virus lives on.
The vaccine that is available now will protect someone against contracting HPV if they've never been exposed to it before. But, if you've already been exposed, it won't help.

Yes, it's possible.
If you were in a previous relationship and caught the virus from someone who did not know they had it (or did not tell you they had it), you can get the hpv virus and not show symptoms sometimes for years afterwards.

If someone is infected, it can be contracted. Getting checked wouldn't hurt if you go to the gyno they can detect hPV by doing a pap.
