My wife has had her left lung removed for bronciogenic carcinoma at the left hilum. it is now 9mths post opp and she has a persistent cough since, antibiotics cleared the cough up for a few days then it would come back. She has had radiation treatment and the cough has been worse since, she is at present on antibiotics which have no effect at all, she sees her GP next week but wont see her oncologist until Dec,,,, a CT scan showed an area of irritation about halway down the remaining lung. Apart from the cough she copes very well with the reduced lung capacity and can walk around quite normally without getting really short of breath ! Any helpful comments or advice would be appreciated while she waits to see the specialist !!

Thanks Nic, her last ct scan was 8th Aug, in part this is what it says -Non specific peribronchovascular nodularity anterior segment RUL ? inflamatory ! it also says No recurrent mediastinal lymphadenopathy is evident !! Note , the cough is more when she gets out of bed in the mornings , not so much during day exept for isolated coughs with sime mucus present in the throat !! Thanks to all answers so far !

I'm sorry about the condition of your wife. If she has a lung irritation maybe a cortisone aerosol may improve the cough if it is caused by an irritation of the remaining lung. Cortisone generally works antiinflammary.
If she is coughing heavily over night you can get her codeine drops (lowers the need to cough) but please only on a short term as it doesnt remove the cause of the cough and this can turn out dangerous.

If such symptoms occur maybe it would be possible to see her oncologist earlier. How long has it been since the last CT? When have her last blood tests been? Has she been having chemotherapy?

Have the GP do another CT scan and if irritation is the best he can come up, go see the oncologist now, not December.

Call the Oncologist office and tell them what is going on and see if you can get in now. GP's are good........but should see the specialist. GOOD LUCK TO YO AND YOUR WIFE !!!!
I'll be praying for you both.
