Pricing is a combination of factors. Good mooncakes are made by experience & expensive chefs, using more expensive ingredients,
It can be made with the cheaper red bean filling or the more expensive lotus seed paste. Cheaper lotus seed paste use lower grade and less fresh lotus seed, and mixed with cheaper ingredients like green bean paste to get the volume. The skin also required skill to be thin crust and baked just right, with clearly defined print.
You can taste difference between cheap and expensive ones.

They jack up the price for the mid autumn festival.. Actually the lotus seed paste in it only costs about a dollar, maybe less..
In Asia they costs next to nothing, as they are easily found. You can even make your own baked and non bake mooncakes at home!!

Lotus seeds are way more expensive than just flour & eggs and they really need a lot them to make one genuine moon cake.
The cost for the packaging and the big scale TV commercials they put on back in Hong Kong also account for the high prices.

That might not be the price in American or Canadian dollars (I don't know where you live) Did they bring them from China? What is the currency there? Yen?
