nooo.... isn't used at all sugar to cook pasta !!! it is just an American thing, if you do to an Italian he'll insult you...
tomato sauce must be a little salt, not sweet...

and you MUST NOT put oil in water while pasta is boiling, just after cooked and dried ... i tell you because I've read something like that here...

and...of course... ketchup isn't used as tomato sauce!!...

that's the italian way... if you wanna suggestion to cook it tell me!

NO. however, if you are having a problem with your tomato sauce, try making marrinara. The onions in the sauce add a sweetness after they are sauteed and translucent. Don't carmelize them...that would make the sauce more of a french based tomato sauce. And please use olive oil for sautee, pinch of salt, crushed garlic clove......excuse me, i'm going to go make some...ciao.

I believe it takes away some of the acid from the tomatoes, & makes the sauce less bitter.

i believe the reason they add sugar is to knock out some of the tartness of the tomatoes but i am not Italian but i see allot of cooking shows
