trance you are a bit naive.

I am only going on what I have heard from people who are there. The utter fear from the ones that are still stuck there. The question may have been badly worded but the truth of it is this is not the same type of war as Korea or Vietnam. The enemy is everywhere even here in the United States. Don't be naive this is an enemy that could be your next door neighbor. Can we get them out it remains to be seen. No we haven't had the same casualtys in this war that we had in the police action of Korea or Vietnam. Not yet.

The number of casualties for the military and Iraqis keep mounting as I right this. The sooner we get out the fewer our military will suffer. There is no military solution only political. The US Iraqi policy was doomed from the beginning.

(1) The casualty rate for American troops is nowhere near that of other conflicts such as Korea or Vietnam. I've done two tours myself as infantry and I can tell you from firsthand experience, that Iraq is nothing like the sort of fighting male members of my family underwent in the Second World War places like Monte Cassino, and in Vietnam in places like the Central Highlands.

(2) Those who preach doom and gloom are usually civilians who have no experience or understanding of combat, whether it is an insurgency or not; and those who have not set foot in Iraq at any point before or after the war, much less anywhere in the Middle East. It is NOT anywhere near as bad as what happened to Afghanistan.

(3) The question itself is badly worded and badly conceived. It expresses a sentiment that is uninformed by facts, rather than an appraisal of the reality on the ground.

If you don't believe me, Questioner, do your homework: Name me ONE platoon that has in any of the fighting in Iraq from 2003 to present, sustained casualties in excess of 50%. Then do some reading and look at what units in the Korea in the 50s and Vietnam in the late 60s to early 70s sustained.

You're not doing anyone any favors with a badly thought out rhetorical question, least of all yourself.

you say that as though we're over there dying left and right. for the age range of the average soldier, it's actually SAFER to be deployed than to be running around in america.

at the same time, i'd rather we do the job right instead of backing down. it amazes me that in a world where people sufferred the holocaust that there are still people who believe that there is never a time to justifiably use force. Maybe some people have forgotten, but i watched almost 3,000 innocent people die on an airplane from terrorists who were from countries all across the middle east... and what's more i then had to sit and watch as the middle eastern countries REVELLED in the rampant, deliberate, and unprovoked death of innocent civilians. The culture of death MUST be stopped, regardless of whether it's action to destroy innocents or simply celebrating that wanton destruction.

I'm afraid you can't invade other countries free of charge-it's payback time for all the Iraqis who died as a result of America's actions. It is amazing when you read the viewpoints of some Americans on the Iraq war-you really haven't realised yet that your country has done a terrible thing in invading Iraq. An act of pure wickedness and while it is sad for the bereaved it is right that you should be punished so perhaps you can learn the lesson.

Of course. If the government decides to pull them out, they'll get out fine. The only issue is when/if those in charge (you can't say "we" as "we" don't have any voice here) decide to pull them out. They are stuck in the middle of a civil war, protecting Haliburton trucks as chaos regins around them. Its a terrible position to put our troops into, but there is really very little we can do but give them our prayers that they get home with as many limbs as possible.

edit:

I'd love to know why I am naive, and suggesting that our boys can't get out alive isn't naive. Watch the recent documentary The War Tapes, a great, non-partisan look at the war by the soldiers themselves. The entire division got over there, did their tour and got back alive, though not unscarred.

If they paid attention in training, "we" wouldn't have to ask that question. In basic training, you are told how to stay alive. It doesn't get much easier than that! Stay where you belong, pay attention and stay alert. When it comes down to him or you, who will it be?
