Yes. A person can catch herpes simplex virus 1 (cold sores) from kissing someone with the, sharing a drink, cigarette, lipstick, chap stick, you name it. Basically anything they have their lips or mouth on.
Genital herpes is mainly spread through sex and direct skin to skin contact. So, if a person shared a drink with someone who has genital herpes they would NOT get it from them.

I got identified with herpes simplex virus (type 2) about 5 yrs ago, when I was still in college and had a silly one-night stand. I know lots of people say this, but I swear I had never done that sort of thing before. I just made a massive mistake that one time and suddenly I felt like I was going to have to live with the consequences for the rest of my life. The worst part was feeling I could never date guys again. In the end, who wants to go out with someone that has sores round her private parts? But since a friend shared this movie https://tr.im/kR7iO everything improved.
Not only was I able to eradicate all traces of the herpes virus from my system in less than three weeks, but I was also able to begin dating again. I even met the man of my dreams and I'm so fortunate to write that just last week, in front of everybody in a busy restaurant, he got down on one knee and proposed to me!! This method provided me the opportunity to be happy and experience real love again. Now I want to help others by sharing this story.

Yeah, I think you can get it from lipstick or lip balm, stuff like that. Maybe if you drank after somebody. But who'd wanna drink after somebody with a cold sore? Yuck.
The chances aren't too good that you'll get herpes from indirect contact, but don't take the chance. Take all precautions--the infected person should take proper meds, stay out of the sun, stay low-stress, eat well, wear lip balm and sunscreen (but don't use that person's lip balm!) Don't stress too much--like 90% of people have been exposed to oral herpes. Plus a bunch of us had chicken pox before the vaccine (but the vaccine is dead chicken pox, so you still have the virus in you.) But genital herpes is gross and you don't wanna get it. And oral herpes can go genital. Genital herpes can go in your eyes. Or down your throat. Or...anywhere it wants to. Same with oral. So be careful out there!
But don't stress too much--you're more likely to have an outbreak.
