Hi i just did that diabetes test thing to see if i was at risk and it said that i could be. I do have quite a few symptoms that have gotten worse over the years, I have been to the doctors when i have been ill and they havent found anything wrong with me but have taken blood tests , but i dont know weather they check for diabetes. I do feel tried a lot of the time, i do tend to shake alot, and i am a little overweight and dont lose weight easily, and as i have taken the test it says blurry eyesite, i went to the opticions to get my eyes tested because of this and they said my eyesite was fine and i didnt need glasses, but it is still blurry. Also i do seem to need to pee more than i used to its not all the time but where as i use to go maybe twice a day i go like 10 times a day. Should i go and get it checked im 19 years of age and my doctor isnt helpful at the best of times. But i think it could be getting worse.

Going to the doctor when you're ill doesn't mean that they did a glucose test. Make an appointment with your doctor, tell him your symptoms and that you're concerned about diabetes and why. If he doesn't take you seriously get another doctor. I actually saw a blurb on TV about diabetes and went to the ADA site because I had a lot of the symptoms. I went in to see my doctor who was sure something else was wrong with me. Guess what? He was wrong. However, even though he didn't think I was diabetic, he did the test...plus a thyroid. Your doctor should be willing to work with you, it's your life, your health. If he's not supportive and helpful, he's not doing his job and it's time to move on. It sounds like that if you have diabetes it's probably type 2 because of the weight. Insulin resistance makes it hard to lose weight. Good luck and take care.
Fasting is not 20 hours, it's more like 10-12 hours. You would stop eating or drinking anything but water say at 9 in the evening and go in for the test first thing in the morning.

IMPORTANT: Get your blood sugar tested. Make sure you ask for it specifically. Fasting or not -your blood sugar will be higher than normal (over 120 mg/dl) if you have it. It will not be in the normal range (depending upon how bad it would be if you do have it, your blood sugar (a.k.a. blood glucose) could be anywhere from say 140mg/dl [beginning stages of diabetes] to 800 mg/dl [full-blown diabetes]).
I was 19 when I was finally diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes (the kind where you automatically go on insulin shots). I believe I had the symptoms of diabetes as early as 14 years old. When I just turned 18, I went to this physical analization test done by a local hospital. They tested me for almost everything except diabetes. They even asked me if diabetes ran in my family (I said no). They never checked my blood sugar even though (looking back) I had the symptoms of a full-blown diabetic. It wasn't until 8 more months had passed and I got a regular physical (my eye sight got blurry is what prompted me to get a physical) and they had my blood sugars checked, and once they got my results back, the emergency room called me and told me to go down there immediately -my blood sugar was off the chart (they measure up to 800 mg/dl)!
Get your blood sugars checked immediately. At the very least, get yourself a blood glucose monitor and check it yourself and see what number you come up with. If it is high, chances are that you are a diabetic. If you're underweight, most likely Type 1, but if you're overweight, most likely Type 2. Most diabetics are Type 2 (and they start on diet, then pills, then insulin -if the priors don't work).
If you do end up having it, the sooner to find out and treat it, the better chance you have to live a normal life without possible health complications in the future.
If I can help you any further, please feel free to e-mail anytime.
Good health to you!

Yes, you should be tested. Being tired can be a lot of things. Many people are hypogylcemic (low blood sugar) before diabetic. Because I was alert and interested and had myself checked I stopped the diease for about 20 years longer than other family members.
It doesn't hurt to eat 5 or 6 small meals, get good protein, limit sugar, limit salt, eat moderate amounts of fruits and refined carbohydrates.
I get blurry eyesite from high blood pressure but it could also be a warning signal of something else.
Age isn't everything. It is in your best interest to have a fasting and feasting blood sugar - if the doc won't do it go somewhere else. The only foool is the one who doesn't follow up.
Good luck.

For Heaven's sake Yes. You have enough symptoms to be concerned about plus your test results.
I don't know what country you're in but surely you ought to be able to see another doctor - if you are in the UK the first thing you should do is telephone NHS Direct and discuss your symptoms with them and I'm sure they'll have some suggestions about how to consult another physician: maybe there's a different one practising at the same surgery, or you simply avail yourself of your right as a patient to insist upon a second opinion.
You're 19. Please don't be offended, but this is maybe one of those times when you draft your parents in for a spot of help being assertive on your behalf. Meantime, please treat this as urgent before you do something silly and dangerous like passing out in a strange place.
Good luck and God bless/

Know the facts about any nutritional health. To have a healthy body at any age you need three things 1.Excercise 2. A healthy low glycemic diet 3. High quality nutritonals that you do not get from your diet. Even if you have diabetes it is controlable at this stage of your battle! Check out these sites for more info. If your count for sugar is over 100 it is not a good thing

Don't ever feel embrassed about getting a second opinion - it YOUR body and you know when something is wrong. I've heard that type 2 diabeties can'tt be diagnosed by just one blood test - because the blood sugar levles vary - you need to take several test over a period of time. Speak to your doctor again, tell him/her how worried you are, if you don't feel (s)he takes you seriously, get a second opinion. Hope you get better soon, love liz :D

I would ask your doctor to organise a fasting blood test explain to him your concerns there may be many other reasons why you have these symptoms but it will help to clear one up obviously if you do have Diabetes depending what type it can be improved by diet
