The best way is to be sitting sharing a meal with an expert! They can physically adjust the way you're holding them, as well as offering you advice..!

Failing that you've got some links from other answerers. Sniky's links are quite good, that's how we hold ours - we live in Japan. Trkyvic1's person is holding them a bit close to the end ... I don't know, maybe that's how Chinese people hold them?? But the positioning of the fingers is still the same, so look at all these things and practice!

Actually you have some really great information here, in fact everything you need to learn, the rest is practice. Learning is actually far easier than it appears and many people pick it up fairly competently after only a couple of meals.

I am from Vancouver, Canada where 20% of the population is of Chinese heritage. (We like to joke that when you see white people who can't use chopsticks, they are obviously tourists from Toronto.)

If you want to practice without attracting attention, do it at home. The Chinese chop up practically all their food into bite-size pieces precisely for use with chopsticks. You can do the same for practice. Hardest thing to handle is rice, so make yourself fried rice for practice.

My son uses chopsticks for anything that even remotely resembles "Chinese food" and at 12, he's extremely proficient with the sticks. (And we live in Mexico!)

You will find that eating Chinese food, in the Chinese way (individual bowls of rice and huge "communal" platters in the center of the table) is by far the most "fun" way to eat "Chinese" after you have mastered the sticks! Good Luck!

How to use chopsticks

Two important conditions for effective use of chopsticks must be remembered. One is that the two lower ends must be even, that is, one must not protrude over the other. The other condition is that the two chopsticks must be in the same plane.

1. Place the first (lower) chopstick in the base of the thumb and index finger and rest its lower end below on the ring finger as shown. This chopstick remains fixed.

2. Hold the other (upper) chopstick between the tips of the index and middle fingers, steady its upper half against the base of the index finger, and use the tips of the thumb to keep it in place.

3. To pick up food, move the upper chopstick with index and middle fingers.

4. After a little practice, you will be able to use chopsticks as easily and as naturally as the Chinese.

1. Some restaurants have the instructions on the package, so just practice from that point.

2. Surprisingly at the age of 5 my daughter learned by watching the cartoon, Caiou, on PBS.

This is an easy one.

Have a particularly sadistic friend place you in a sealed room with only a gallon of water and a pair of chopsticks. Ask the friend to then place a mass of sticky rice in a small hole in the wall. Request that the hole be too small and deep to accomodate your hands or fingers, but the perfect size for accomodating two chopsticks. Starve for three days as you ponder how to extract rice with chopsticks. Then, when you are weak from hunger, use the chopsticks to fish bits of sticky rice out of the hole. Within moments, you will notice amazing hand dexterity and able chopstick-use emerge from your fingertips. When the hole is empty and your friend is satisfied with your torture, ask...no, COMMAND...your friend to take you to an excellent Chinese restaurant. You will find yourself as dextrous with chopsticks as a child born and raised in Beijing.

very carefully...
best is to eat only with chopsticks for days...make foods easy to pick up...vegetable stir-fry, meat strips, sticky rice...

after awhile, you'll get the hang of it.
