Miso, like split pea? Hmmmm.
It really depends on the kind of miso you use. There are several varieties. The darker brown miso is salty, with a rich taste. The blonder colored misos are milder, not as salty or rich. In some ways it tastes like beef bullion.
It is actualy very good for you, so even if your not crazy for the flavor, you might try it.
It famously cleanses heavy metal pollution out of the body. Health physicists recommend it after exposure to radiation or chemical toxins.

As for what it's like, it's just a nice, savoury, soup! It bears NO resemblance to tofu!
Is it good? Yes!!
The person who says it's 'watery' obviously had some without enough miso paste in it - that's a shocking oversight on the part of the chef!
You should NEVER need to add soy sauce! Try making it yourself - you can buy miso paste in an Oriental food store, or an Asian food store, and you might need to add dashi (fish stock) unless the miso paste has some already in it. An alternative to using dashi would be to add some fish or clams to the soup.
Boil up some water, add a little wakame (seaweed - not a lot, it swells up BIG time!) and some chopped veg of whatever variety you like - I don't recommend peppers / capsicum though, they just don't go with miso! Then add some miso paste at the end - you'll need to taste-test it though, you don't want it too strong and salty, but you want it to have flavour! Don't let it boil once you've added the miso - just stir it until it's about to boil, then switch off the heat. You can add tofu - if you want it - right at the end. You don't COOK tofu, you just HEAT it up..!
For the greatest enjoyment, put it in a bowl that's suitable for drinking out of! Japanese people don't use spoons for miso soup - just chopsticks to fish out the solid bits, and the soup itself is drunk directly from the bowl.
BTW, miso is funny stuff to dissolve - put it in a tea strainer and hold it in the water while you poke and stir it with a spoon - otherwise it won't all dissolve and you'll find a big lump of it in the bottom!
Plus, when you're eating it the miso tends to settle a bit - which might make it appear 'watery' - all you need to do is move it a little, either by fishing something out with your chopsticks, or by picking it up and gently moving it (but not enough so that it splashes!)

It's tasty and salty. Sometimes there are a few small pieces of tofu or seaweed in it, but it is not a thick soup. You stir it up a little with your chopsticks before you drink it in order to distribute the miso flavoring.

I think it's tasty. Dilute the miso paste in a little bit of water and add to a FISH based broth. You can use spinach or any green leafy vegetable, tofu, diced potatoes (very typical with my Japanese friends) Add soy sauce to taste and top with finely sliced spring onion greens on top. You can also add beaten egg to the mixture if you like.

It really depends on where you get it. Most local restaurants here in Reno serve a very watery version of it, usually with only some sliced green onions and small bits of tofu. I still like the taste of it. The broth is usually pretty tasty even though there is not much else in it. There are a couple different flavors--white and red. I prefer the white.
My wife, who happens to be Japanese, makes it very thick, and fills it with much bigger chunks of tofu, sliced onions, seaweed, mushrooms, and other veggies. It's fantastic.

Miso is good...it has kind of a ginger taste to it. You have to add something to it (like rice, shrimp, and soy sauce) otherwise its a little too bland.

Very good, soft and cloudy texture with seeweed and what I believe is tofu. I would prefer over Wonton.
