Rambutan is simillar to lychees, but it has red hair all over the shell. It is really juicy and sweet. It is harvested ripe, so you can't ripe them once they've been picked. You can also freeze them, they are really delicious when they are slightly frozen. (Peel off the shell before you eat, of course.)

:) hi there...yes, rambutans r yummy!! You guys bought 2....and i assume they must have travelled a long way...hmmm....how do u know if they r ripe....well....when u open them, the flesh should be off-white n juicy n sweet...the seed is inedible but part of the skin of the seed always tend to stick to the flesh...(I don't know why and this 'characteristic' of rambutans annoy me!! :P )
i hope that you enjoy the rambutans....if they r not sweet.....perhaps, you can look for canned rambutans in Asian grocers...those are a little too sweet but still retain the flavour of the fruit. You can dilute the syrup with water and ice and serve it as a dessert. Alternatively, you can drain the syrup and serve the rambutans with ice-cream...or blend them into a smoothie!! Bon appetit!!

The Rambutan (Nephelium lappaceum) is a medium-sized tropical tree in the family Sapindaceae, native to southeast Asia, and the fruit of this tree. It is believed to be native to the Malay Archipelago although its precise natural distribution is unknown. It is closely related to several other edible tropical fruits including the Lychee, Longan and Mamoncillo. In Costa Rica and Nicaragua, it is known as mamón chino. In Guatemala it is known as Rambutan.
It is an evergreen tree growing to a height of 10-20 m tall. The leaves are alternate, 10-30 cm long, pinnate, with 3-11 leaflets, each leaflet 5-15 cm long and 3-10 cm broad, with an entire margin. The flowers are small, 2.5-5 mm, apetalous, discoidal, and borne in erect terminal panicles 15-30 cm long. Rambutan trees are either male (producing only staminate flowers and, hence, produce no fruit), female (producing flowers that are only functionally female), or hermaphroditic (producing flowers that are female with a small percentage of male flowers).
The fruit is a round to oval drupe 3-6 cm (rarely to 8 cm) long and 3-4 cm broad, borne in a loose pendant cluster of 10-20 together. The leathery skin is reddish (rarely orange or yellow), and covered with fleshy pliable spines, hence the name rambutan, derived from the Malayan word rambut which means hairs. The fruit flesh is translucent, whitish or very pale pink, with a sweet, mildly acidic flavour. The single seed is glossy brown, 2-3 cm long, with a white basal scar; it is poisonous and should not be eaten with the fruit flesh.

Rambutan is a tropical fruit and you'll know when it's ripe when it is red. It has spikes (long soft spikes not like in durian) It tastes better than lychees. You squeeze the fruit and you can eat the white juicy part. The seed is big so be careful.

They are very tasty and sweet. Just make a slit in the outer skin and remove this outer layer with your hands. It should be a pearly white colour, eat all the nice fleshy white fruit and throw away the pit.
