Where Does Curry Come From

So the term "curry" started when India was under british rule. In India, technically there is no such thing as a curry. So somewhere along the lines "curry powder" was sold to the brits by dumping some spices together and so curry was born. The actually food had existed for ages and ages.

I saw a program about its history that seemed to make sense.

Although there were many spices etc that the british bought from colonial india, the current "english curry" was invented by the bengali community in the east end of london.

Most of them had trouble finding jobs so they started to open "indian" restaurants and for convenience, started preparing a mixture of spices that could be quickly put into a dish to make a "curry".

The british army, they were down to thier last scraps of food and mixed it altogether with some flavour, this is how they made curry. BUT curry is also a native dish of India, they cook it properly over there!!!

India but of course many of the curries in the UK are of English origin
eg Chicken Tikka Marsala-invented in Birmingham in the 1970s

During the first world war, bad food was disguised with spices from around the empire.

Curry, as we know it here in the UK, is essentially British. You will not get the same dishes in a British Indian Restaraunt as you would in Dheli.

Tradidtional Indian cuisine uses the same herbs and spices as we do, but with not the same emphasis on meat with lentils and pulses and vegetables being more common, and where they do involve meat they are generally grilled in a tandoor or on a spit, like tikka.

We brits, preferring wet food, added the sauces to indian dishes.

British army in India. The spices masked the unpleasant and rancid meat rations.
