I have had HPV for over 5 years. I developed cervical cancer from it when I was 17 years old. Over the past 5 years I have 2 abnormal pap smears, 2 colposcopys, and 1 Leep procedure.

The colposcopy didn't cause me much pain, it was more like cramps. Really bad cramps! I'd compared them to the worst period cramps I have ever had. My doctor told me to take a couple Ibuprofen before the procedure to help with the cramps. By the end of the day I was feeling fine again.

It never caused me to lose my period but it did cause a discharge for the next few days. What happens is, they cut a small amount of the tissue on your cervix off. Then they have to apply a solution to the cervix to stop it from bleeding. So when your cervix starts to heal a women will have a sort of orange/brown colored discharge. All it is, is the solution they applied to the cervix so it would stop bleeding.

The doctor is probably going to want you to come back every 4 months for re-paps. I've been going to my OBGYN every 4 months for the last 5 years! As long as you are getting your paps smears done and staying on top of it you should be just fine. Good luck to you!

A colposcopy simply means the doctor put a microscope into the vagina and got a real good look at the individual skin cells growing on the cervix. Imagine the microscope sitting on your lip..also a delicate skin tissue like in the cervix. The doctor sees some cells that are infected with hpv, a common bacteria. The culposcopy machine is able to scoop off the bad cells with a sharp object and then apply electricity to the freshly bleeding spot to stop the bleeding. Imaninge that happening to your lip. Wow! It would hurt a lot. You might have real bad stomach or lip cramps. Since there are so few nerves on the cervix , she would probably cut deep enough that that HPV is NEVER coming back in that spot. Probably the uterus is all upset and spazed, so nothing is getting out of there for a while until it relaxes. Then you will see your period but it may have turned a dark or even black color. No problem. Old blood is black. You had a surgical procedure. Be kind to yourself and patient. Even a badly-skinned knee takes two weeks to heal completely. Try a heating pad on the abdomen. No not get constipated..eat prunes? Take something for pain. Call the doctor tomorrow and demand a perscription for something with codeine in it so you can sleep. She should come up with about 15 pills, if you are lucky. You only get them if you are in pain so be sure to be in pain. People in pain whine a lot , are demanding and do not hang up when they are told no. If they have to they call back every hour. Maybe Valium would help? Anything???

I had a coloposcopy. They go in there with their microscope, and usually take a snip of the tissue to analyze it for cancerous cells growth or various other abnormalities that could occur. It does hurt, but the cramps and missing period depends on where they take the tissue from (the further up your vaginal wall the more likely you are to have those symptoms). Make sure before you go in to take a good strong dose of tylenol or whatever over the counter painkiller you use. They will prescribe you a painkiller for afterwards also, so the pain will not be too bad after. It'll just make you very uncomfortable for a few days as it heals.
