If you mean 'fumate' as in produce fumes, or more precisely, vapour than yes it can or rather, it does: try placing a piece in a plastic bag. It will become damp inside. I usually keep it wrapped up in paper bag to allow it to 'breathe' and avoid the unpleasant smell. I hope that's answered your question.
