I would have understood why people ate so much meat in the 50's 60's and caveman days, but in our day in time why do people consume so much meat! It is bad for our society in so many ways I can't explain them all, but I just start with this. You can get protein from plant sources too! Another thing, animals are abused harshly and while some of you beleive"animals don't have souls" (I won't even get into that) but we do have souls, so why do a lot of meat eaters not feel compassion for the animal we are eating.
I mean okay( Iam a christian) and some christians think meat is what we need, but God is a loving ruler, I sure he didn't want the animals to be abused. It would be one thing if the animals were not abused but they are! Also, america is FAT, we have enough food, I am sure we don't need all the meat, I mean all the grain we use to feed the animals we kill, we could be feeding starving countries with!

And we also are allowed to eat nuts/ legumes as vegans & vegatarians , which are plant sources, and they contain loads of protein!!!!!

Any way ,animals are killed for no reason in this country, we are not starving ( infact ,we are the fattest countrie in the freaking world)
We have a ton of food ,but we wanna kill an entire animal( that was harshly abused, ) and then eat it, WHAT A WASTE!
I am so ashamed of the country that represents me. Fat *** bitches and ignorant killers/ abusers. Europe is more skinny and more smarter & down to earth.

I'm a vegetarian and that's exactly how I feel. I just hate the idea of people killing innocent lives for something they can get from other sources that doesn't involve killing. I mean you're NOT gonna die if you don't eat meat. There are all sorts of protein substitutes plus eating so much meat isn't good for you anyway. It's just not healthy and if American people can just learn to eat less meat then you wouldn't be so damn fat. We call ourselves human beings because we're different from other animals. We say that we're more intelligent and civilized then stop acting like animals!

One thing that pisses me off is that sometimes people just don't respect my decision(to not eat meat). My family still tries to make me eat meat because they think what I'm doing is silly.

Guess what? Screw them I just don't care.

"I mean okay( Iam a christian) and some christians think meat is what we need, but God is a loving ruler, I sure he didn't want the animals to be abused."

Well, if you're going to believe the bible, God condemned vegetarianism, claiming it was being ungrateful and turning away from gods gifts. Hell, the bible actually TELLS you to eat meat, let alone allowing humans to. He also commanded sacrifices in the earlier days, and put people in a lot of pain for little reason other than they came from the wrong tribe, I doubt he'd care.

" Also, America is FAT, we have enough food, I am sure we don't need all the meat, I mean all the grain we use to feed the animals we kill, we could be feeding starving countries with!"

Well, America is fat, but apart from that, you're very ignorant. The world already has MUCH more than enough food, the only reason anyone is starving is because they can't afford it. Many African countries, for instance, can't afford to import much food at all, and have to live of what they produce themselves. It is worth noting that these poorest of people, who are never far from starving, still grow and eat meat if they can. That is because if then need to for nutrition and if they didn't they wouldn't have enough food; the claim that rearing meat is inefficient is plain wrong. It they found it easier to survive from growing just grain no doubt they would.
Most meat is reared on pastures that would be unsuitable for crops. The steep hills, the moors, the places with soil which isn't quite good enough, etc. As that cannot be used for crops it is not inneficiant at all to use it for meat. Also worth mentioning that the grain argument only applies to grain fed animals, not grass fed ones.
Secondly, giving these starving countries free food would not be a good idea, even if we had much more to spare. Imagine you're a farmer, and another country gives your free food. Are people going to take the free stuff or buy your's? The answers obvious, and for that reason free food would bankrupt that countries food industry, which would be very bad for the country.

"Europe is more skinny and more smarter & down to earth."

Hey, I come from Europe (albeit that we Brits don't consider ourselves as true Europeans) and I think we have less veggies if anything. Although we don't use hormones in meat. Your fatness has much more to do with activity, junk food and laziness.

Anyway, there are plenty of benefits to eating meat, which are well documented. Please do some research. Look, I'll even provide links for you:

Hi there you do have a good question, you do have so many mean answerer's, those people should not even answer your question if there going to be so mean about it. I should say that God did give us the meat to eat with are veggies meals, but not to abuse the meat. Yes we should keep it to a minimum. Like only turkey, chicken, pork, beef, and fish. Let's just say that if thy could make it agents the law to eat meat. we would have to build more green houses to keep our foods from not being eaten by our animals. Then the prices of fruits and veggies would probably go sky hy. If we did not build these green houses, all the food will be gone with no time. I try to be funny some times, like when I told a friend of mine that is a vegetarian, would you feel sorry if a rabbit couldn't eat that carrot. Thank you for asking that question, sorry if this is not what your looking for. I hope that you do fine what you been looking for. Good Day

You are very passionate about this aren't you? I am a vegetarian - I thought I was a vegan but I bought some leather shoes so that makes me a vegetarian. I don't know why people have so little compassion for animals.

But you know what I found out that shocked me? The Dalai Lama, a Tibetan Buddhist, eats meat every second day.

As an aside, there are farms that have animals that are treated in a humane manner and if people are going to put animal protein into their systems then I really think that this is the way to go.

My wife and I eat mostly vegetarian food with some fish and dairy products. My son has never even tasted meat. Yesterday I ate a roast beef sandwich and felt guilty plus lethargic. It just goes to show.

This morning I decided to go back to the usual routine and no more eating meat just because someone cooks it. This rarely happens but I was pressured by my mother not to say no, because she insists that it is rude. I disagree. I would be more than happy to make salad, a bean dish and possibly a fondue for someone.

I eat soy meats in which are not only loaded with protein but taste better than the animal flesh some devour. What I know today is that I am not contributing to the cruelty of the animals processed for market and I never will be. Meat is aquired not required...don't waste to much energy trying to convert meat eaters...they are ignorant to vegetarianism and the health benefits of it.

I totally agree with you. I know most meat eaters don't like to think about where the meat comes from or what the animal went through and that's how they live with it. I also like to think that they wouldn't actually go to a farm and kill cows, chickens etc. themselves to make their burgers and nuggets. There are always exceptions, but those ppl are cruel and I wouldn't trust them with humans either - most serial killers start out by killing and torturing animals! I don't know how to live in such a topsy turvy fantasy world, where I can love my pets on one hand and eat other animals for dinner.

The only reason meat eaters bring up God so much is b/c they can't come up with a good enough scientific reason to justify eating meat. If it's okay to kill animals b/c we're more intelligent than they are, then by that justification it should be okay to kill mentally challenged ppl and babies.... I believe in God as well, and there was no killing of any kind in the Garden of Eden. It was only after the fall of Adam. Perhaps animals are for human use, but in this day and age where we have all the world at our fingertips, there is no need to eat meat. All the horrible, scary diseases popping up like mad cow, and the Asian bird flu, are resulting from animals being raised for human consumption in horrible conditions. The rain forest is being chopped/burned down at alarming rates to make room for pastures in which to raise beef cows. Even by reducing our meat consumption by 10%, those free acres could produce grains enough to feed 60 million ppl.

If anybody reading this doesn't feel they can stop eating meat for animal cruelty reasons alone, please read this article about the environmental destruction the meat industry creates:
http://www.emagazine.com/view/?142

If you ever felt like one person can't make a difference, this is where you can. The meat industry is all about supply and demand. If we stop buying it, they stop producing it. I never stopped b/c I didn't like the taste, I stopped b/c I couldn't be a hypocrite anymore.

I am a vegetarin for similar reasons as you. What I have learned is that sometimes social customs move slower than science and technology, meaning, there are a lot of meat substitutes and American society in particular probably does not need animal products. However, it may take awhile for everyone to come to this conclusion.

First, Shea I'd like to say that God gave us dominion over the animals maybe for a "TEST"and that we learn from animals and they supply vegetation, but, just to clear theings up 'SHEA" maybe the way we view animals is the way 'aliens" view us, if you believe in that sort of thing, but, say it's true, a face, two eyes and your soooooo freaken hungry that you need to eat or support in murder as to eat this helpless entity- such as animal? why not eat your dog shea? Or your cat shea? is that different? what makes it different shea ? Shea,,, what makes the difference in animals being consumed by the Overeaters Anonymous of America??? Shea,, are you there?
