The modern day eggplant is usually purple and gourd shaped but the early form, before selective breeding, was small, oval shaped and white. In other words, they looked liked eggs.

They are called eggplants because their unripe fruit (it is a fruit because it has seeds in it, vegetables have no seeds) looks like eggs on the stem that they grow on. Does that help?

Thank you for asking -- I have long wondered that myself! When I was a kid, I took the name literally, and thought if you sliced one open, there would be bright yellow yolks inside! ;-) Hope someone tells us a really good answer!
