i don't mean giant tarantulas which could kill you, and that is reasonable but the tiny little things we get in the house and the daddy longlegs. What exactly is it about them that scares people?

I know why I'm scared of them: When I was VERY young (about five), I watched the movie Kingdom of the Spiders. It's a crappy movie about giant spiders that take over the world and eat people. What's more, I watched it again a couple of years later. So, the fear developed. Then, as luck would have it, when I was twenty, I rented a small house, and I'd find little baby spiders every day. It started out with one or two then escalated to twenty or more. And guess what: where there are baby spiders, there are monster mother spiders. HUGE damn things. I was having nightmares about them, even waking nightmares where I would wake up, sit up in bed and look up and "see" a spider slowly coming down towards my head. There was nothing there. The exterminator was able to get rid of most of the babies, but I'd still find a big one every now and again. Needless to say, I did not stay there long.
As for why others are afraid of them, maybe there is something genetic involved. Because I know what a pain it is to be afraid of spiders, I didn't want my kids to be afraid of them, and whenever we'd see one, I'd hide my fear. Nevertheless, both my daughters are afraid of spiders. Go figure.

When i studied psychology i read that a phobia, such as agraphobia can be learnt. I supose it could be the same principle of conditioning: see Watson & Rayner (little Alfred) If a person is told that something is scarey or associate horrible feelings with an object they can create and irrational fear. So all i can think of is that a cave man somewhere got into a fight with a spider and he came off worse. lol It has happened to my nephew, my sister is not afraid of spiders but when ever one was around she would point and say ergh and make shuddering noises and now he does it too, in effect he has learnt the phobia.

Like others, I have been creeped out by spiders as far back as I can remember. I was bitten by one of those "tiny little things" 2yrs ago. I have never felt as bad as I did then. The site of the bite nearly drove me crazy by alternating between itching like crazy or burning as if it were on fire. The poison destroying flesh. The site had to be cleaned out 3 times over a period of 7wks. Trust me when I say that they can only deaden the area so much. All I could do was grit my teeth and deal with it. I had to take a lot of antibiotics for awhile which wasn't pleasant. Now I have this huge ,deep scar on my arm that looks like a bullet hole. I used to be creeped out by the "tiny little things", Now I'm Scared of Spiders!

Because they crawl, bite, and some look creepy. Some kill!

Good reasons to be afraid.

Personally, some of my best friends are spiders; some are beautiful. Have u seen the one that hops like a flea? He's cool, but hangs out in Central America.

I think they get a hard time just because they are not fluffy and cute.
Giant tarantulas are not killers honestly unless you annoy them and like anyone it is self defence in most cases.
Not everyone feels uncomfortable around spiders, daddy long legs fly and that makes people uncomfortable.
But imagine what a human looks like to these creatures SCARY.

They run fast and they could come on onto you, and run just as fast, which is very scary. You don't know what they're going to do next, and no matter what you say or do, you can't control it. AND, they also make webs out of nowhere and are suddenly dangling down from you. Plus, I don't believe in killing things, even the teeniest fly, so the only thing I can do is scream at someone to come and move it for me.

I know some arachnaphobes say it has to do with the way the spider moves all 8 legs, creeping along.

I hate any type of spiders. It is the way they crawl with all those legs....mice and snakes are easy compared to a spider

Did you choose the wrong category? I'm not scared of spiders, but I'm not to keen on eating them and I don't have a recipe for spider à l'orange.
