A persons 40th birthday party is going to attract more "gag" gifts than serious ones. After all, this is when youth surmises that middle age starts.
And I am assuming that most of those 150 people are going to be family.
Having a gift registry implies that you are only having the party to generate gifts for the receiver. This is, after all, WHY wedding and birth showers are held.
A 40th birthday party should be more about good friends and family getting together to honour the person. Not seeing who can give the most expensive gifts. I would venture to say that it should not be about gifts at all, except maybe those gag gifts that everyone expects to see at a 40th birthday party.
A "roast" type get together would probably be more enjoyable for everyone involved, than trying to duplicate the ambiance of a wedding reception.
Is there a charity that the birthday person is passionate about? Maybe they would like to see the money that would have been spent on gifts sent to this charity instead?

Not at all. Just don't say it in the invitations. (That part would be tacky) By the time you're 40 you already probably have a house full of stuff. Gag gifts won't help and will be thrown out anyway. A registry would be for more useful things. Maybe they need new towels to replace 20 year old ones? Maybe their blender is ancient? Who knows? Nobody is *forcing* guest to buy off the registry, they can ignore it.

There is nothing at all with that, somebodys 40th birthday is something special and should be celebrated, and gift registrys are a good thing, because buying somebody a gift for their 40th can be hard because they are at a point in their lives where they may have everything they like and need.

I understand the registry thing.... but I think ANY registry is tacky !!
Not putting down those of you who love them... I just don't care to be told WHAT to buy... I simply feel its rather rude and selfish. I know there are people out there who cannot EVER think of what to buy someone. But I am not one of them... I would never use a registry to tell people what I want... I feel blessed with what ever I get from friends even if I get 4 of the same thing. I suppose it has to do with the way I was raised.
Good Luck with your dilemma ! Posting it here should get you a treasure trove of opinions ! : )

For a wedding?... fine
For a baby shower?.... fine
For a FOURTIETH BIRTHDAY?!?... tacky, tacky, tacky!!! I need tape so I can put it on my eyelids to keep my eyes from rolling out of my head.
You don't have to adhere to a gift registry in this case at all. A simple gift or a nice card will be fine especially if your financial state is not so good, your friend should understand.

Definitely tacky unless the party is for some charitable cause such as a worthy but impoverished person who needs the gifts, in which case a few $$ in an envelope from each guest would be a nice gesture.

If someone I knew did it, I'd think it was tacky. I had friends moving out of state and they were debating about setting up a registry. Tacky. In my mind, they're okay for weddings, but for anything else it seems like you're saying, "Gimme, gimme, gimme, I want this." If you get something you don't like/want/need, be polite and then return it.

No, not at ALL...in fact, it's quite standard procedure around here...and if you look at places like Bed Bath & Beyond on-line you will even see a catagory for registry which is "birthdays".

Registries are a good idea for anyone, at any 'gift-giving' event.
