Taken from the website for the Vegetarian Society of the UK...the oldest vegetarian society in the world...

A vegetarian is someone living on a diet of grains, pulses, nuts, seeds, vegetables and fruits with or without the use of dairy products and eggs (preferably free-range).

A vegetarian does not eat any meat, poultry, game, fish, shellfish or crustacea, or slaughter by-products such as gelatine or animal fats.

Types of Vegetarian
Lacto-ovo-vegetarian. Eats both dairy products and eggs. This is the most common type of vegetarian diet.

Lacto-vegetarian. Eats dairy products but not eggs.
Vegan. Does not eat dairy products, eggs, or any other animal product.

Fruitarian. A type of vegan diet where very few processed or cooked foods are eaten. Consists mainly of raw fruit, grains and nuts. Fruitarians believe only plant foods that can be harvested without killing the plant should be eaten.

Macrobiotic. A diet followed for spiritual and philosophical reasons. Aims to maintain a balance between foods seen as ying (positive) or yang (negative). The diet progresses through ten levels, becoming increasingly restrictive. Not all levels are vegetarian, though each level gradually eliminates animal products. The highest levels eliminate fruit and vegetables, eventually reaching the level of a brown rice diet.

Other terms can be used in describing various vegetarian diets, though their exact meaning can differ. The term strict vegetarian may refer to a vegan diet, though in other cases it may simply mean a lacto-ovo-vegetarian diet. The terms common or broad vegetarian may be used to refer to lacto-ovo-vegetarians. Demi-vegetarian is a term sometimes used to describe persons who eat no or little meat but may eat fish. Persons consuming fish but no meat are sometimes called pescetarians.

Can Vegetarians Eat Chicken

If you eat only fish and seafood but no other animals your a pescatarian but your definitely not a vegetarian as eating fish is eating meat. If you eat fish and seafood and birds like chicken and turkey I'm not sure what you are-though I'm sure there is a name for it-but your definitely not a vegetarian as eating birds counts as meat too. Vegetarians don't eat any animals or anything that was once part of an animal and fish and birds are animals.Eat what you like but don't make people confused about what the word vegetarian means by calling yourself one when your not.

I've been a vegetarian going on 4 years now and I eat only fish. Yes, there is a name for it, and yes, I'm still a vegetarian. It seems to me like most of the people here are confused on the conditions of vegetarian v. vegan. If I were to completely abstain from eating meat, I would be a vegetarian, but if I was to do that PLUS abstain from using anything that comes from animals (shampoo, lipstick, etc.) then I would be a vegan. But I'm a pescetarian, so I only eat fish, but I'm considering going to chicken and fish, but I still feel bad. But what I just told you is basically what it is. You have vegetarians, and then you have sub-types of vegs depending on what they eat.

A vegetarian can do whatever they want...

but in the strict sense of the word, vegetarians do not eat meats. The Roman Catholic Church has declared that fish is not a meat, and the Eastern Orthodox declared that Lamb is not a meat... for purposes of fasting from meat during Lent. However, chemically, biologically, or scientificially speaking, anything that moves on four legs, or two, or six, or eight, or twelve, or with wings, or with a tail and fins, or a bunch of tentacles, or claws, or some number of shells is an animal, and the fatty, proteiny portions of animals are meat, which real vegetarians do not eat.

Some vegetarians have different views on exactly what is and is not edible for vegetarians. The extreme point of view is taken up by vegans, who will not eat any food products that contain any manner of animal materials.

Vegans will not eat dairy products, because they come from cows. They will not eat eggs, which are baby chickens. They will not eat gelatin, which is the cartillage of animals. They will not eat calcium suppliments, which are made from bones or oyster shells. They will not eat worchestershire sauce, which contains anchovy extract. They will not eat products containing Red Dye #40, which was once made from the exoskeleton of beetles, but is now synthetically created. They will not eat honey, which comes from bees...

Vegans are a little extreme, but I must admire their consistency. The rest of you vegetarians can cheat every now and then. I've known vegetarians that will eat any meat on a pizza, pork rinds, beef jerky, and bacon... well, in moderation of course...

Really, I'd be more concerned about getting a balanced diet. Your body needs a certain amount of protein and fat, and meat is the most common place to get it from. If you choose not to eat meat, fine, but remember to eat more nuts, and tofu, and sprouts, and beans, and such, so your body gets what it needs.

I don't really know... I mean, chicken and fish aren't mammals but they are still animals. I call myself a vegetarian, but I still eat seafood and occasionally chicken. Looking at all these answers I would say I am semi-vegetarian.

Sure a vegetarian can eat these things but then they aren't a vegetarian. Those things all have to be killed and shed blood so there is no way they are a vegetarian food.
