Diabetes runs in both sides of my family, especially my mother's. My grandmother and all of her 7 siblings were diabetic. I'm just wondering if anyone has any suggestions as to how I could avoid setting off my gene? Cutting back (or off) sweets is a given, but any other suggestions?

If you are speaking of juvenile diabetes then there is no way to avoid it, if you have the gene for it. But if you are speaking of type 2 or adult onset diabetes then you can avoid it. Most people think that a person must be obese to develop this type but it is not true. Of course obesity can lead to type 2, but not always. What happens is that over time your insulin receptors on your cells become numb to insulin. If you have a lifetime of eating the wrong foods like a lot of simple carbs you are setting your self up for type 2. Start eliminating simple sugars in your diet. Eat whole grains, the whole fruit, vegetables etc. Do not consume sugar or fruit juices, white flour products. Also since it does run in your family keep your weight healthy and exercise. Also eat your carbs with protein so that your carb absorbtion and insulin secretions will be kept to a minimum.

As you know, you can't change your genes. The CDC has an article on the internet from which the following was taken. Hope this helps. I have included the link at the bottom.

The Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP), a major federally funded study of 3,234 people at high risk for diabetes, showed that people can delay and possibly prevent the disease by losing a small amount of weight (5 to 7 percent of total body weight) through 30 minutes of physical activity 5 days a week and healthier eating.

The same goes to me, but so far i am healthy due to having a healthy diet. Eat fresh foods like vegetables and fruits a lot. No sweets pls. And no soft drink like coke as these are killers for diabetes. Even if u drink coffee or tea, always make it a point to have them with less sugar and cream. Make it a point to eat less at night (ex: whole meal bread are good food). Red meats will aid diabetes in the sense that u will suffer high blood pressure. U can eat them in moderate. And finally, u need to exercise. Even walking for 30 minutes a day in the park is a form of exercise.

Good idea... wish I would have thought of this three years ago. Here are some suggestions for you:

For type I and type II diabetics (and those who are overweight and could potentially become diabetic). Copy and bookmark the webpages I‘ve listed below… they are invaluable for those with diabetes and/or weight problems...

I've found a wonderful book that will help you control your diabetes and minimize or even eliminate the complications. Some folks who became diabetic due to poor diet and obesity are effectively cured by following the advice in this book. I'm a type II (inherited), but it helps all types, especially those who became diabetic due to poor eating habits. It's by an author who has really done his homework, Patrick Quillin, Phd. It's called, "The Diabetes Improvement Program". I have tried his suggestions and found them to be very helpful. I have no complications whatsoever and my blood sugar levels are quite stable. Yes, I still have to take Metformin (Glucophage) daily, but it's the minimum dosage (500mg) and I only have to take it twice a day. I have been off Metformin for as much as a week, but this was with vigorous exercise. Many, what I call, non-hereditary type IIs (those that don't have a close relative who had it) have gotten off medication completely, just with diet, exercise, and supplements. So, in some instances, it most certainly can be 'effectively' cured. Read more about it here:

The book explains what's going on in our system and what to do about it. It's really easy and inexpensive. It's basically diet, supplements, and exercise. For example, did you know that cinnamon helps blood sugar absorption? It also controls cholesterol and triglycerides. This is according to the USDA:

For men: Are you suffering from erectile dysfunction? I was. Yes, WAS. Now that everything's under control, I'm able to have nearly normal sex again. I've also put together a little webpage highlighting some of the things I've learned here:

Don't ever be overweight. Avoid sweets. Some foods are currently being studied to show they are triggers for diabetes, I'm not sure which foods they are.

One more thing, avoid viral infections. Your immune system sets off the series of events leading to contracting diabetes.
