One more question, A friend told me that to be a true vegetarian, I have to give up meat in general. I thought vegetarians ate poultry & fish?

There is a whole spectrum of vegetarianism. One group eschews red meat but eats fish and poultry.
Another eats no meat at all. Still another kind of vegetarian won't touch animal products -- so no milk, cheese or butter, along with no meat.
You can pick the one you want. Then just switch over. If you try doing it a bit at a time you're going to get all messed up and wind up with a very complicated diet. Just pick something simple, and stick to it. If you don't like it, try another brand of vegetarianism. The bottom line is, it's supposed to make you feel better, not complicate your life.
Good luck!

Vegetarians don't eat anything with a face. That includes fish and chicken. Any reduction in meat eating is a good thing. If you want to switch, you should start cooking vegetarian recipes (or buying fake meats) and swapping them out for meat meals. Gradually you will have lots of vegetarian recipes that you can turn to when it's time for dinner. Because you weren't thinking that you had to give up fish or chicken, I suggest getting rid of them last from your diet. www.vegweb.com.
There are lots of foods that you probably already eat that can be made vegetarian by just not using meat in it (pasta dishes) or using veggie burgers and crumbles for substitues.

You could try just phasing out meat. First cut out the red meat and hamburgers, than the fish and the chicken. Veggie patties are a great substitue for burgers. I like Bocca and Morning Star.

Some people consider themselves vegetarians even though they eat poultry and fish.

I consider myself a vegetarian because I don't eat anything that used to be alive and walking around.

Vegans don't eat any kind of animal product. Which I think is extremely hard to do. Sugar even has it's faults due to the way it's processed.

You can give up whatever you want. There are special names for vegetarians who still eat poultry and fish, but that's not really important. If you do give up red meat and pork make sure that A. you are getting enough protein. Try googling "complete protiens" for a list of non-meat food combinations that will still give you all of the amino acids you need to make a complete protien. I know that rice and beans is one. B. make sure that your iron isn't too low. An easy way to check is to look in the mirror and gently pull the lower lid of your eye down so that you can see the red tissue below your eyeball. It should be red all the way from the outside where it connects with your skin to the inside where it connects with your eye. Here's a good picture of what I'm trying to discribe: http://medicine.ucsd.edu/clinicalmed/eye-normal-conj.jpg

Good luck!

Yes, vegetarians do eat poultry and fish. There are many types of vegetarian diets.

Pat Beck, Nutrition Specialist writes...

Vegetarianism is generally defined as the practice of living on a diet made up of vegetables, fruits, grains, nuts and sometimes certain animal products. Vegetarian diets encompass a wide variety of eating patterns.

A Vegan (strict or total vegetarian) diet is made up exclusively of plant foods, that is, of vegetables, fruits, legumes, grains, nuts and seeds. Foods of animal origin, including all meat, fish, fowl, eggs and dairy products, are completely excluded.

A Lacto-vegetarian diet includes milk and other dairy products in addition to plant foods.

A Lacto-ovo-vegetarian diet includes eggs, milk and dairy products in addition to plant foods. Foods obtained by slaughtering an animal are avoided.

Semivegetarian diets may be of several types. An ovolactopollovegetarian diet includes poultry in addition to milk and eggs. For a pescovegetarian diet fish is an acceptable food.

A part-time vegetarian diet is followed by those who rely mainly on plant foods, but who occasionally eat red meat and other animal foods. The 1980s saw a rise in this group.

"Many people become vegetarian instantly - they give up meat, fish, and poultry overnight. Others make the change gradually. Do what works best for you." (http://www.memorialhospital.org/DietaryVegetarian.htm)

poultry is considered meat.....i'm not sure about fish, but some vegetarians eat fish. I would consider this a meat, so i probably wouldn't eat fish.
You might want to look into the Vegan Diet, but it's a bit extreme. Not eating anything processed and you can't use or wear animal products. These people are usually animal friendly. They won't kill spiders.
Anyhoo, you can also customize it to what you feel comfortable eating. make sure you get your protein and Vitamin B requirements. good luck.

If you want to be a vegetarian, first you should stop eating meat. Then get your head checked because there are very few things in this world that are better than a good steak cooked just right.

i am a vegetarian... and unless you eat hardly ANY meat at all i do not suggest you just do it on a whim. but if you do decide to become one make sure it does not turn into a crash diet. sometimes it can be a little difficult finding some different things to eat without meat in them. but good luck with it . the world could really use a few more of us : )
