I've no idea where you live. However, Mexico is a large and diverse country as is the U.S. We argue over what authentic barbecue is, so you can expect even more division over what is 'authentic' Mexican.
I eat Mexican, where there are Mexicans eating. The taquerias sometimes don't even speak English. You can't get more authentic than that.

In Santa Monica (CA) definitely check out Monte Alban on Santa Monica Blvd. Like other ppl have said there are many regions in Mexico that have different kinds of food and this place specializes in food from Oaxaca state. So good!

It's different everywhere. And the same goes for Mexican food . It varies by region. So that is a hard question to answer. Just go where the Mexicans go to eat. usually small out of the way places where they speak little to no English.

In Phoenix there is a little hole in the wall called Espo's. It has the best mexican food. It is run by a family there and they cook amazing food. I love their fish tacos and their tamales. You should try it if you can.
