NO NO & again I say NO!!! Heating pads n such can be used on diabetics but not as therapy, it will NOT help w circulation!! In general diabetics have bad circulation in their feet & hands & de to this ther is a decrease in sensitivity hence heating pads can actually cause severe burns to the feet & other appendages due to the fact that you dont notcie how hot they are getting & dont remove them when you should. If you should want to use a heating pad make sure to keep it on low & preferably put a towel or small blanket around it to help prevent burns & dont sleep w it on.

No. Heat therapy is not good for people with diabetes. I am not sure exactly why though. I think my doctor once told me that the heat thins your blood and can cause problems.

Ice is most beneficial in the first 3 days post injury. It won't hurt to continue icing, but heat can be okay at this stage as well. What you really need is appropriate rehabilitation. Ice/heat therapy will mainly just help with pain and are not intended to help restabilize your ankle. Try balancing exercises. If you are able to put full weight on it (hopefully in 4 months you can) stand on one leg (the affected one) and balance for as long as possible. When you are able to stand for 30-60 seconds increase the difficulty. Stand on a cushion or pillow which will challenge your balance more. Try balancing with your eyes closed. If you have access to a trampoline - do this exercise on the trampoline. Basically you are challenging the muscles/tendons supporting your ankle and leg which will help stabilize/strength the joint. Another simple exercise...trace the alphabet with your big toe (helps improve ankle range of motion).

Try reflexology. You need to take special care of your feet. Go to a foot doctor to even get your toe nails cut. Anything that could cause an infection could cause you to loose a limb. The Vibra baths, etc that you put your feet in could help you. Use that along with epsom salts. If heat makes your feet feel good then go for it. You just to really take care of them though.

Heating pads and saunas are usually frowned upon for diabetics. If you have reduced sensation in your feet, it is quite easy to not realize that you are burning or drying them out.
