Like others have suggested, avoid 1st and 2nd hand smoking and areas with heavy traffic congestion and other forms of air pollution. This is a progressive disease, and the best thing to do is bite the bullet and go to the doctor who can prescribe inhalers, and forms of o2 therapy.
Limiting any strenuous activity will help as in advanced cases even very minimal exertion can cause difficulties with breathing. Positioning can make a difference so if someone tried sleeping sitting up in bed supported by pillows rather than lying flat it would help. Leaning forward with elbows to the sides is also a good way of improving breathing. Finally there are a lot of breathing excercises which help. Learning to take deep breaths which extend the diaphragm and breathing through pursed lips help as this slows down breathing, creates positive pressure within the airways and uses the abdominal muscles to breath rather than putting all the work on the lungs and diaphragm.

there is no over-the-counter medicine to (not really cure but) help emphysema.
one thing that the patient can do is to have his doctor sent him for pulmonary rehabilitation -- this does not cure emphysema, but this improves the quality of life. they do exercises there as ordered by doctors and supervised by professionals, and over the weeks -- as their tolerance increases, they take it up a notch. this helps the patient tolerate exercise and allow him to participate in other activities that would usually be restricted.
if patient is having breathing problems, always bring the prescribed inhaler with him all the time.

I don't know if poster Jennifer is kidding or is just plain stupid! Anyway, no there are really no natural remedies. Once you have emphysema you have it for life. Don't smoke, stay on meds prescribed by doctor, and avoid things like smoke, cold air, etc. Otherwise, this is a progressive disease.

My mother suffers from it and COPD. Her lungs get so full of junk that its all she can do is cough. I'm guessing anything that makes for a productive cough. They get so tired easily from coughing but they will cough until their lungs are clear (ish).
My mom also has a nebulizer. I bought her a portable one here in the UK and took it to her in the US. It also helps to open up her lungs. She gets medicine from the Drs for that though. You have my concerns and prayers as its not easy watching someone you care about suffer. (And even more so when they are stubborn!)
Best of luck to you my dear.

My mother always used a sperm application, She would apply it every night, or every other night depending on availability, and then wash it off the following morning. I do this less regularly, but then I've never ever had emphysema.
