They slipped a menu under my door 2 days ago...and since I hardly ever eat japanese food..I decided to give them a call. I got the tokyo fried chicken over rice and salad with some "chicken" "noodle" soup. Lmao , well , the only thing I ate was the 4 little pieces of tokyo fried chicken since the rice didn't taste like rice and the salad didn't taste like salad. I took 2 sips of the "soup" and thought to myself...this soup tastes nasty. This wasn't remotely close to tasting good. Why didn't the rice taste like rice and the soup ..soup? Seemed like the only thing that was cooked was the tokyo fried chicken. So all in all , I spent 15 dollars on 4 little pieces of chicken because I had to throw away the "rice" "salad" and the nasty raw soup. I'll never buy/eat from another japanese food place ever again.I've never had such a bad eating experiance in my life and this had to have been the first time since I was 7 years old that I refused food. Do you people like non cooked rice and soup?

And I eat just about everything..maybe that's why I felt the need to write about this nasty food. Tokyo fried chicken tasted similar to general tso's chinese chicken. I haven't thrown away food or refused food since I was 7..and i'm 29. This was the worst of the worst... Lmao , the rice didnt even taste like rice for christ sake. Wow .

I'm Japanese, but I totally understand what you're saying. There is NO good Japanese restaurant in East Village. (Maybe except for Soba-ya on E. 9th St. ) I had the similar experience as you had in Dojo Restaurant on St. Marks Place. I ordered tendon (tempra on a bowl of rice), but they served me rotten garbage.
I'm sorry that you had such a terrible experience with Japanese food. I think you just picked the wrong restaurant. (I didn't know that there is Sushi Boy on St. Marks Place, though.) There are many Japanese restaurants in Midtown that serve excellent dishes, but I think you will never eat Japanese food for the rest of your life, will you?
My favorite Indian restaurant Baluchi's has good "rice," "salad," and "soup," so you might want to try them someday? They aren't nasty at all!

First of all--where do you live? Is this authentic Japanese food? We've lived in Japan for the past eight years. I'm sitting in Japan right now as I type this and I have to tell you that I love Japanese food. I've never even heard of Tokyo fried chicken. What is that?
I think it is very unfair for you to judge an entire culture and their food from one experience that sounds like it came from some gimmicky place that doesn't even serve authentic food.
I am 100% sure that if you came to Japan and tasted the food here you'd have a totally different perspective.

I don't know about Japanese, but Chinese is really good. Try someplace like Hong Kong Buffet sometime. That way you can try all kinds of different foods and pay the one price to do so. They have some things that I don't like, then thay have things that I just love!!

It sounds like what you got was Americanized Japanese food, much like Egg Foo Yung is Americanized Chinese. I lived in Japan and never heard of any of what you mention.
For what it's worth, tonkatsu is great. Same for dishes like shabu-shabu and sukiyaki. I had some food in Japan that I didn't like, but that was mostly due to the Japanese predilection for putting raw egg on stuff.

All the Japanese food I have ever eatten was in Japan. It was great. Most of the ones here in the USA are slop houses compared to them. My buddy is married to a girl from Japan and her food is great also.

Maybe you picked dishes that don't agree with you, or maybe the restaurant you ordered was not so good. Japanese food can be very delicious, if you know a good place, and know what to order.

Go to a buffet sometime so you can try different things to see what you like and don't like.
