About half of the people who have recurrent outbreaks of genital herpes feel an outbreak coming a few hours to a couple of days before it happens. They may feel tingling, burning, itching, numbness, tenderness, or pain where the blisters are going to appear. This is called the prodrome.
I have personally had genital herpes for over 5 years. I haven't had an outbreak in almost 2 years (and that's without taking the medication everyday). I ONLY take the medication when I "feel" an outbreak coming on. I usually get a numbness and tingling feeling. Everyone is different though and some people don't even feel one coming. Since I've learned what can trigger outbreak for me I have learned to avoid certain things. For example, public hot tubs or jacuzzis will cause me to have an outbreak literally the very next day. I haven't been in a jacuzzi for years because of this. If you know what triggers outbreaks for you, you can learn to avoid these things.
I read a new study found people who start taking their medication when they feel an outbreak coming on can actually avoid an outbreak all together or lessen the severity and shorten the time of an outbreak. Also, the longer you have had genital herpes, typically the less outbreaks you will get and the less severe they are.

I got diagnosed with herpes simplex virus (type 2) about seven yrs ago, while I was still attending college and had a dumb one-night stand. I realize lots of girls will declare this, but I swear I had certainly not done that sort of thing before. I just made a mistake that one time and all of a sudden I felt like I was going to have to live with the implications for the rest of my life. The hardest part was feeling I could never date men again. After all, who wants to go out with someone that has sores round her private parts? But since a friend shared this movie https://tr.im/2DwzL everything improved.
Not only was I able to remove all traces of the hsv from my body in less than 21 days, but I was also able to begin dating once more. I even met the guy of my dreams and I'm so lucky to write that just last week, in front of everyone in a busy restaurant, he got down on one knee and proposed to me! This program gave me back the opportunity to be happy and experience true love. Now I want to enable you too by sharing this with the whole World.

herpes (hur-peez)
A group of related diseases and the viruses that cause them. These diseases are marked by the development of blisterlike sores on the skin or mucous membranes of the body. The herpes virus may invade the mouth region, producing fever blisters or cold sores, or may cause a sexually transmitted disease in which the painful sores appear on the genitals. Chicken pox is another disease caused by a herpes virus.
# After an infection, the virus remains dormant and may return at a later time. Shingles, for example, is a recurrence of the chicken pox virus, and outbreaks of genital herpes recur over time.

An infection of herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV2) can lead to genital herpes, a sexually transmitted disease that causes blisters and pain in the genital area. Herpes simplex virus type 2 can be passed in the urine or genital discharge of an infected person. HSV-2 remains dormant in the sacral ganglia. The viruses become reactivated secondary to certain stimuli, including fever, physical or emotional stress, ultraviolet light exposure, and axonal injury. HSV-2 recurring outbreaks will generally occur in the genital region.

it is very hard to tell when you will have an outbreak. if your immune system is down (if you get sick with a cold, etc.) or if you are very stressed out, these are good warning signs because sickness and stress will cause you to break out quicker than anything. also, it may sound strange, but the last time i broke out i used neosporin and it really helped a lot! i was not completely cleared up, but i felt much better within 2 days...and it cut my healing time by more than half! it's the best thing i've found so far without going to the doctor.
