whole wheat, whole grain, high fiber carbs such as pastas, rices, breads, tortillas, chips, cereals, oatmeals, lean proteins such as fish, chicken, ham, turkey, nuts, peanut butter, soy products, brightly colored fruits, vegies, berries, and low/nonfat dairy products. stay away from overly procecced carbs such as white breads, pastas, etc. potatoes are good but eat small ones and limit the amount of fatty condiments that you add. potatoes are loaded with fiber, minerals and vitamins. instead of using man made sweeteners, use Steveia, aka sweet leaf. it's loaded with fiber and is natural. eat 3 moderate meals and 3 snacks a day and make sure to drink plenty of water, green tea, black teas, and limit diet pop to one or two a day. don't listen to the hype about diabetics not being able to have any sugar. i use Royal Jelly on my toast and do eat sweetened oatmeal, but my blood sugar is in control. you have to eat right. eating balanced meals and eating a good meal plan is better than counting carbs. counting carbs gives diabetics the option of eating a lot of processed foods which provide no real nutritional value. make sure to balance exercise with good eating habits. good luck. i've been a diabetic for about 15 years.
