Salt prevents the pasta from foaming over. If you don't believe this, add salt when the pasta starts to foam - you'll see the foam get knocked down quickly. Olive oil tenderizes the pasta.

The salt for flavor do not add til water is boiling. the oil to help keep spaghetti from sticking. another wise tip. Keep a little reserve water on the side. It helps if the pasta gets too sticky. Or u can add some olive oil directly to the pasta.....

You add salt to the water when boiling pasta because it's the only true way to season the pasta itself w/o sauce.

Adding Oil to the water is senseless. The oil is washed off of the noodles when the boiling water is rushing around the pasta.

Adding Oil to the pasta after it's cooked is to keep it from sticking to itself before you add sauce to it.

If you are going to add sauce to the pasta right after the strain it from the water,,, there is no need to add oil to it. If you do, the sauce will not stick to well to the pasta,,, making the dish sloppy.

Mr Handy is the first one to get it right. The salt helps bring the water to a boil faster and the oil helps to keep the pasta from sticking together.

salt should be added to make it the same saltiness as the Mediterranean. What this does is increase the boiling point and adds some flavor.

oil is added to keep the splash from the boiling water to a minimum.

more oil is added immediately after draining to keep the noodles from sticking and to help the sauce to stick to the pasta.

The salt is used to add flavor and to bring the water to a boil faster. You use oil so that the noodles don't stick together. Trust me, everything won't get drained out. Try it!

you must add salt in hot water BEFORE you put past in water... when pasta is ready, you drain it and after (immediatly) add sauce OR oil...
never add oil to hot water, to don't stick pasta while cooking you have JUST to turn it with a wooden spoon or fork...

salt is needed to give flavor to pasta, oil to not attach !!

i'm Italian and this is the right way to cook pasta... try

Salt actually dissolves in the water, and the pasta becomes flavored by it. In case you hadn't tasted raw pasta, it's not very flavorful. Your pasta water should be as salty as ocean water.

Oil isn't always necessary, but does lubricate the pasta to keep it from sticking, even as you're pouring the pot into a colander.
