It was invented in Italy as a poor people food, made from just a few ingredients: flour, water, yeast, tomato and mozzarella...or anything that could be found in times when the abundance of food wasn't comparable to what we have today... Even now, the pizza you eat in Italy is considered healthy food by all nutritionist, differently from it's American version that is real "junk food".

pizza was originated in Italy, in particular in Naples... first time in the history when compare the name Piazza is in 1800 when Queen Margherita of Italy went to Naples and in her honor a men did a pizza for her with colors of Italian's flag (green=basil, white=mozzarella, red=tomato) and give to this kind of pizza her name ... also now this pizza in Italy is called Margherita and is the base for all others pizzas...
I'm not agree with people that tell that pizza was refined in USA 'cause pizza is much more refined in Italy because are used just healthy food and is much more good...
I'm Italian but I'm been in NYC too and pizza wasn't so good, instead when i eaten Pizza in Naples it was simply great... just try it, and you understand WHERE it was created !

According to one story, it is supposed to have originated in Naples (that is also where we get anchovies).
Tomato (red), basil (green), and cheese (white) on Italian flat-bread is supposed to resemble the colors of the Italian flag.
Italian immigrants brought pizza to New York and Chicago, where the Americans further refined it.

Early accounts of pizza can be traced back to the Greeks. Even before the Italians.

I watched a documentary about this very thing on either PBS or Food network. It had two proposed origins.
The preferred one for me was the guy who named his concoction the 'Margherita'. It consisted of fresh basil, and mozzarella, and sliced tomatoes placed on a thin crust and baked in a coal-fired oven.
Pizza to me is thin crust. Deep dish is a casserole......not a pizza.

Firstly, Pizza was invented in America not Italy. New York to be precise. It was invented by Italian immigrants who used leftover spaghetti sauce and bread dough and any leftovers they had and cooked it in their oven. Because N.Y. city was the birth place of pizza you get the best pizza in N.Y.
