I am looking into becoming a vegan, but if I am going to do this, I want to make sure I do it right. I was wondering what would be considered cruelty-free sugary substitutes for vegans. Know any specific brands that I could get at a Walmart? Is splenda considered safe? I know it is made from sugar, but I don't know if it uses refined sugar. Is it just refined sugar that is the problem, or can you use Raw Pure Cane sugar? Are sugar alcohols considered bad? Any on-line resources I could read would be great also. Thank you.

Polka Dot Dot: Obviously, you have no idea what you are taking about and are useless to my question. Animals are used in the processing of sugar.

Sugar Pie: Who said I wasn't eating according to my conscience. Again, another useless answer.

I would try Stevia or liquid Stevia. . . I prefer the liquid as it dissolves better into things. It tastes wonderful too.

If the sugar is Raw it means it has not been processed and therefore does not contain the bone char that most vegans want to avoid. Depending on how strict you are - some won't eat even that sort of sugar because they use animals to help harvest it.

on some levels it was an "old wives tale" about the bones being used to burn and make sugar or on other levels well it may have been real. It is really company by company.

I use a lot of teh different brands of "natural cane sugar" Also I use RICE SYRUP , I use MAPLE SYRUPS , I use AGAVE NECTAR from time to time.

"not what other PETA freaks have to say about it."
I love when people use that lame stereotype, because personally I HATE peta.

anway, sugar in the raw is vegan and so is non-sugar sweeteners. I'm not sure about splenda though sorry.

Just buy raw sugar. Splenda is not vegan friendly.

How can refined sugar be cruel?

Unless.... plants are living things. And you kill a plant to eat it. That's cruel! The poor plant! The paper bag the sugar or sugar sub packets come in was a tree! That's cruel! Gasoline to go to the store to buy the stuff came from fossils of living animals! OMG!! The cruelty!

Just trying to point out how silly a "cruelty-free" diet is..... Eat based upon your own consciience and what makes you feel good, not what other PETA freaks have to say about it.

Vegans are allowed to eat sugar. Because it isn't an animal byproduct.

Wow, you need to read a little more before trying to become something.
